May 21, 2011 by Michael Berkens

The Department of the Navy has filed a trademark attempting to take ownership of the term Navy Seals

Earlier this week we reported that Disney just 2 days after the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, filed for a Trademark on the term “Seal Team 6”

A couple of days ago Fusible.com reported that the Navy filed a trademark for the term “Seal Team”

Now it appears that The Department of the Navy has filed a trademark for the term Navy Seals.

This trademark application was made on March 13th.

A representative for the owner of the domain name NavySeals.com reported to us that the domain was put up for sale just a day after the raid,  asking an amount in the seven figures.

Another company, RESCO Instruments of Coronado CA filed for a trademark on Seal Team 6 om May 16th for watches as did another company, M. Z. Berger & Co., Inc. of New York.

RESCO Instruments also filed for a trademark on Navy Seal on May 16th.

Master Cutlery, Inc. of New Jersey filed for a Trademark on the term Navy Seals in Feburary of this year for Knives

The domain name NavySeals.com was first registered in 1996.

NaySeal.com was first registered in 2000.

SealTeam6.com was registered in August 2010 by Oversee and uses their registrar NameKing.com

I hope the Navy is awarded a 360 degree TM for everything “Navy Seal” related and uses the proceeds from whatever licensing they may permit to fund services for Veterans.

The idea that Disney could claim mark ownership of something like that is just offensive.

The department of NAVY SEALS will claim back all trademarks regardless which companies applied for trademark, unless it has been licensed or permitted to use the trademark.

Also, looks like all NAVY SEALS TEAM SIX related words in the domain names will be transferred to Dept of navy Seals eventually…

It’s funny in that so many companies & organizations are just now beginning to understand the value of domains and the identity + brand value they provide.
