With ICANN approving the .XXX extension yesterday the question now becomes how successful will it be?
There are currently 240,000 pre-reservation according to ICM’s site although there is no cost to pre-register a domain.
Wholesale pricing will be $60 with retail prices expected to be $70 and up per domain per year.
The last extension to roll out was .Co which at least report had over 600,000 registration but that was before the Super Bowl ad.
As always make you pick on the right and place any comments below.

i want to register pornhub.xxx… can i get that? i don’t think you can trademark porn so it should be open. sheeeeeeeesh… when will someone decide that icann is just a bunch of criminals?
Todd says
My God – what a Fluster-Cuck this is going to turn into. Think about it, ANY keyword that gets registered in .XXX will immediately DECREASE the value of the .com in that same keyword. What business in their right mind would want to hold a strong-keword .com that is associated with the new “porn” extension?
This just destroyed an already dying domaining-industry. Enjoy your money, pigs.
Todd says
Want to get back at your old boss at some middling, privately held company in Nowheresville, USA? Simple, just get that company’s name in .XXX and put up a parking page – BOOM!
Pissed off at that ex-girlfriend who left you for another guy? Simple, get her name in .XXX and forward it to a porn-site – BOOM!
Bottom line, although the vote passed yesterday, .XXX will never happen. Cue government intervention in 5, 3, 3, 2, 1….
CJ says
Pay someone to have sex with you and it’s prostitution. Pay someone to have sex with you and film it and it’s art. It’s all BS. Who cares.
Todd says
@CJ,
Alot of people care. I hope the economy eventually tanks worse that the Great Depression, our society could badly use a forced dose of reality.
MHB says
Todaro
Whoever told you that adult brands can’t be trademarked gave you some bad info.
Adult trademarks are just like any other trademark there is not a separate trademark registry for adult domains.
The .XXX extension will have a Sunrise period like all extensions where trademark holders can either get their domains for use or pay a one time fee to block the domain from ever being used.
MHB says
Todd
You can do that now with a .com
By the way people Can use .xxx domains for something other than adult material, the owner has to be a member of the adult community but once that been achieved you can sell cars at cars.xxx if you want
Todd says
“Sunrise Period” is just a synonym for “Blackmail”. When will you people who say “Well, you can do that with any other extension too…” get that .XXX will AUTOFUCKINGMATICALLY carry a Sexual and Pornographic connotation with ANY registration???? This extension essentially FUCKS .com holders who don’t want to own a .XXX just to protect their .com.
WTF would anyone try to sell cars on a porn extension? But, hell, if you sell cars or homes, or whatever with your .com, and you don’t register the same name during the Blackmail Period, you run the risk of a fuc*ing porn site going up on those same keywords…nice.
The government won’t let .XXX get off the ground – watch.
TheBigLieSociety says
How Many .XXX Registrations Will There Be 1 Year After Launch?
——————-
For some, .XXX was launched in 1995.
What Century do you think ICANN will get their .XXX off the ground ?
Gazzip says
“By the way people Can use .xxx domains for something other than adult material, the owner has to be a member of the adult community but once that been achieved you can sell cars at cars.xxx if you want”
That’s stupid, it discredits the whole blurb:
————–
““Stuart Lawley, CEO of ICM Registry, the company behind .XXX, said: “ICANN’s decision to give .XXX final approval is a landmark moment for the internet. For the first time there will be a clearly defined web address for adult entertainment, out of the reach of minors and as free as possible from fraud or malicious computer viruses.”
—————
if there are restrictions on the sTLD .xxx should’nt the first one be – only adult material?
Or does that make too much sense for mere mortals?
Todd says
The government WILL stop this fiasco from happening because of one thing – money. If this extension is allowed to go forward, it essentially KILLS the internet for mainstream commerce – only the obtuse and/or retarded will disagree.
So, you telling us that every church, public school, doctor, preacher, hospital, etc. needs to register a fucking .XXX in their name to PROTECT themselves from getting turned into a .XXX site by some who doesn’t like them???? Puhlease….
Again, this extension will be squashed by the government – I’m writing them a letter today to the FCC and I encourage anyone who sees the potential of the internet to positively impact society as a whole to do so as well.
CJ says
the xxx domain isn’t going to kill anything, hopefully it will serve as a means to keep sick stuff out of the reach of children
Todd says
Just wait, we’ll have Christmas dot XXX and some Christian-hater will have Santa getting blowjobs.
You’ll have Christians dot XXX and you’ll get some…it disgusts and saddens me so much I can’t even type the words I’m thinking.
What happens when their aren’t enough registrations to cover the costs?? What then? Hmmm…I wonder if the registry will turn a blind eye to registrations and content?
Todd says
@CJ,
Bullshit. If anything, it gives the curious an easy to remember extension. Then they’ll type randon keywords in front of the new .Perve extension just to see what pops up.
todaro says
@berky. nobody tells me nothin’. just as well ’cause it probably wouldn’t sink in anyway.
said porn… not adult. (i’m not a lawyer and i don’t even play one on Tv) sure playboy or penthouse … but “watch horses bang my girl” could probably be challenged as derogatory.
redskins has been found derogatory several times but has remained because the owner has the money to challenge the standing to sue of the people who won. anyway… i just like to bloviate about things that piss me off. don’t take anything i say too seriously. (the word bloviate has been used without the expressed written permission of bill o’reilly)
Todd says
I’ll not give this .Perve extension another moment of my time. This WILL be squashed by the government – that’s why we all pay them trillions in taxes, they’re supposed to protect society from things like this.
CJ says
Bull. What they will do is make an easy function on web browsers that if you click on it it blocks all .xxx domain names. I hope that they REQUIRE porns sites to have .xxx domain names so that they can be easily blocked. I have no respect for the porn industry, the legal age to be a porn “actor” should be 21.

Hello Mike,
It is becoming more and more evident that there are many people who are so enamored with money that it has become their God. The older you get and the wiser you get teaches you that money is fleeting and peace of mind is more important.
I used to be a young lion on Wall Street until 15 years ago I wised up to what greed really means to your Peace of mind. The old saying you cannot take it with you applies to money and materialism. Our advice is dont wait till you get older to realize this, you will live longer and happier for it.

“”””(1) Your Headline about “Only the Adult Community” (deception)””””
So the exact words of the title of the article:
“””XXX Domain Names Will Only Be Available To The Adult Entertainment Industry”””
Was a direct word for word quote from ICM press release, which was the subject of the story.
Growing up in New York I learned that you take the juiciest quote from a PR or an interview and lead with it.
Ever read the New York Post?
You must be a New York Times guy.
Yes I want more people to read the posts than less, and a good headline always helps.
“”(2) Your venom rant against the “Free Speech Coalition””””
Perfectly well founded.
Did you see that the massive rally they put on Thursday outside the hotel?
It was Pathetic
25 people including a homeless guy and another guy the gave a sign to as he exited the hotel who had no idea what was going on.
25 people is all they could muster in San Francisco, after blasting ICM for 5 days in the industries largest publication.
Its a good thing I published the story before the rally.
I called bullshit on them and there rally was bullshit.
Check out the picture
It even inspired a website:

Then I went to the FSC Press conference
More bullshit.
Actually I’m going to write another post about them, to long and good for just a comment
(3) Your Bend over backwards moves to PROMOTE .XXX
Every newspaper, news station, news source wrote a story about .XXX yesterday including USA Today and the Washington Post are they promoting as well?
“It is obvious that you Plan to make BUCKS of .XXX”
I do plan on registering some domains in the extension, just like I have in .com, .net, .org, .me, .Co and .Tv to name a few.
Still to date ICM has given me a red cent, a domain or anything else.
ICM Got hosed by ICANN that’s what the Judicial Panel found after ICANN spent millions of our dollars defending it and having to pay for the costs of the hearing.
And finally once again, writing about something is not endorsing it, its covering the hot topics of the day is not endorcing the topic
and .XXX is a hot topic and will continue to be for quite a while
owen frager says
The question is do you envy ICM and wish it were you?

I wonder what the owner of Sex.com is thinking about this extension? After paying $13 Million
dollars for it, I wonder what it will be worth in 5-10 years. Also, with may adult webmasters
making a lot of money with their .com’s, you have to wonder why they didn’t protect their
brands with a more aggressive fight against ICM.

I think you overestimate the powerof .xxx
If you own your bosses name in .xxx who us going to go to it without you telling them to? Like MHB said could do the same thing with .com. If you want new Uniques to find it you are looking at a Loy of work, advertising and seo.
Putting up something.xxx isn’t like putting up a giant neon sign next to something.com that everybody sees.
LS Morgan says
My guess is 100K-200K.
The price is high enough to keep the monkeys at bay, the extension itself is narrows the keyword potential significantly. Depending on what’s left for landrush, I may buy a couple even though adult isn’t my thing.
Still, once you subtract the startup costs, seeing as they cost virtually nothing to create, @ 60 per wholesale, that’s an awful lot of money for running a zone server.
The new TLD game is where it’s at, lads.
Anunt says
If two or more people pre-reserve the same .xxx name, will there be an auction?
D. Williams says
ICANN really do seem to be an organisation that can print their own money with all the new extensions that keep coming out and price rises every year. I think they are getting too greedy and will come back to bite them.
Jerome says
By the way, what do you think about the worth of .xxx domains.
sex.xxx or other domain extensions like poker.web??
Jerome says
@anunt
you can read it on uniteddomains.com
“The allocation of names is done on a “first come, first served” basis, so each domain may only pre-registered once and it is blocked from being registered by anyone else.”

One groups blocking may be another groups access.
XXX should facilitate the use of the DNS Class feature (IN CHAOS XXX…)
XXX will also allow the IPv4 Address Space to be Tagged & RE-Used in Adult Mode avoiding the need to switch to IPv6
Some claim IPv6 will be the XXX Platform base come June 2011 – Parents will be informed
Reputation DNS (OpenDNS) should flourish with XXX & ORG in the same boat
It will be interesting to see where Uncle Sam comes out on this, likely denying access to the XXX Platform
MHB says
Auunt
This will probably run as the same as all recent launches, like .me and .co, so there is a sunrise where trademark holders can apply Deloitte the accounting firm will verify the trademarks.
There will be land rush where people can pre-reserve domains.
If there are more than 2 pre-reserved domains in the land rush there will be an auction.
If there is only one application in the land rush then that person gets it before the registry is opened for general registrations or Go Live.
The price for the land rush is usually higher than for live registrations but it gives you a much better chance at the domain.
Many registrars like United may have pre-registration for their own customers but that is to place domains into the registry when the registry opens for general registrations when all the registrars throw into the system of all the domains they have in cue. Many of these registrars will restrict their own cue, to one application but hundreds of registrars may participate in the launch.
Hope that helps
Then its first come first served.

It seems there are several .XXX “lauches” in progress.
According to some of the .XXX related Registry Spin.Sites there are now test domains active. On Twitter there is some guy (ICM?) now Pre-Registering 20,000 .XXX in the last 24 hours ?
“Valideus will lead the program of work to communicate the details of the rights protection policies, manage the application process…”
Valideous? Who is that ?
At the end of the day, a .XXX Platform may emerge (without ICANN) and the .XX X gTLD (not the Sponsored TLD) will dominate the consumer market. The .XXX Banking is already running, with Micro-Payments in place.
