USA Today Super Bowl Ad Meter Declares Doritos, Bud & VW The Big Winners & Godaddy A Loser

February 7, 2011 by Michael Berkens

USA TODAY’S 23rd annual exclusive Ad Meter just came out for the Super Bowl commercials and it looks like Doritos came out the big winner.

The winner featured a guy who teases a hungry pug dog with Doritos that was made by a 31-year-old part-time designer of websites for kids for about $500.

A Bud Light ad featuring a dog sitter who gets the canines to cater his party tied for the top spot.

“The No. 3 spot for VW’s Passat, and a kid in a Darth Vader costume”

As far as Godaddy ranking they did not fair well although the .Co commercial with Joan Rivers scored well above the Danica Patrick, Jillian Michaels commercial which finished as the 3rd least popular.

As far as Internet company’s CareerBuilder.com got the best ranking.

I will leave my personal opinion out of this, but I had some (non-industry) friends over and they all had the same reaction,”DotCom is about hot babes and dotco is about older women? Don’t get it.” They all know who Joan Rivers is and thought the commercial was a spoof by GoDaddy trying to put down dotCo. I quickly informed them that was NOT the case 🙂

Interesting how people interpret commercials, humor and communication in general. People assume ALL people will see it the way they see it.

    Assume = ASS.U.ME

Did those Pepsi ads make it look like blacks run from a crime scene?

That pretty much says it all, not only was it a flop at delivering a simple message but it managed to make .co look stupid at the same time.

    Hi,

I missed the “.CO”…glad I did now, I will not even watch it online. The “.Com” spot…for a lack of a better word, ‘sucked’.

It is to bad “Bob” can not come up with good a 30 sec spot for his company.

His obsession with the fact that, his commercials have to be Girls half or fully nude…has always been a problem. Over the years he has had more rejected commercials than any other advertiser. A few years ago, they had to reject his commercial 7 times, before they accepted one.

I think the big winner was: Facebook/????. com

Which brings me to something I have never understood and never will. I do not know the exact $ amount of what a 30 sec spot went for this year…I think it was around: $ 3 million….

Now, If I was the owner of say ‘The domains”…and I am going to put up this kind of money for a 30 sec spot.

You better beleive, during the entire 30 sec spot, I am going to have the ‘URL”, TheDomains .com somewhere on the screen for the entire 3o seconds of the commercial.

Yet, to this day… Everyone that spends this kind of money, has their domain name destination…in the “last frame” of the commercial only… and it is only shown for: 1/2 to maybe 2 seconds at the most.

Has never made much sense to me…and never will. IMHO

    Best,
    Dan

Esentially, you will see what you want to see. If .com is the sexy extension, then .co is the all business extension. It is funny how people perceive things. It wouldn’t have mattered if the .co girl was the sexiest in the world, the detractors would have nixed it. Minds were made up long before. So what’s the difference, really.

I don’t think some people like this choice because she is more mainstream than any other Godaddy representatives heretofore. There are many women who want to be taken seriously, as entrepreneurs, who have disdained the other Godaddy approaches. So? Women dictate a lot more of the market than is generally perceived. Are people afraid of a mature female figure? Ask your mother, you might get an interesting reply.

Who has more influence? Warner Bros. or an independent movie studio? If you’re an indie, it’s clear. In terms of mainstream, it’s pretty clear, Warner Bros.

Got this response from my GD rep to my questions about if they will ever reduce the rate.

“I don’t envision the registration or renewal rate of the .CO extension changing anytime in the near future. The registry is doing a good job in helping to maintain the credibility of the TLD by keeping the rates high.

I would expect the rates to stay around the $25-30 range.”

BTW: He is a great rep. – I’m only posting this with his ID removed so that you could see that the .CO reduced rate is like what .info was at .99 cents. You’ll pay dearly later…

If dot co is the all business then they should have got Donald Trump to endorse it. That would have been a spoof with impact. Joan is a joke who didn’t deliver credibility or anything appealing. It is almost as if the ad was meant to be a joke for domainers.

    Hi,

Even though I put, facebook .com/???? as one of the two winners in the domain advertising for this years ‘SB’.

I will be dammed if I can remember anything that came after the “/” of all of them.

That being said, facebook .com/??? still a winner…as it was in 5- 8 or so commercials and ‘FB’ did not have to pay a ‘penny’…. for the extra PR.

I thought the: Kim Kardashian was a good one, but I have no idea what came after the “/”

She should have bought the: .com domain name of her product or company she was advertising….had it on every frame of the 30 second’s… with just the “FB” logo next to it…to let people know the could go to either place or both.

    Again, just IMHO…. 🙂

I see it with “Landon White” (roses are red…) and “Mike”
being ranked 53rd or 60th is the same as SEO – it only counts in the top 3 or 5 at the most.
It is not about .com – (oops .co) – it is iumply just bad ads.
The Bud ad but promoting .co would have drawn in 10’s of thousands of first time .co suckers – when they realize they got sold a bill of goods – they would have called on the .com owners – so for those that sell .com’s for a living – you are the biggest loaser here.

Whether people liked the tv commercial or not, it is doing its job. Even on this article alone, there are 2 sides of the coin. People and the news giving opinions whether its good they used Joan Rivers or not. Whether they like .co or not.

This is exactly how Go Daddy intended it to be. If they used the normal sexy women like Megan Fox, etc, it wont stand out from any other TV Commercials.

It now becomes either smart, silly, or stupid. It all depends on how you look at it.

Whether it is good or bad publicity. It is still publicity. And it will certainly stay in people’s minds. Which is the main purpose of a tv commercial.

Creativity doesn’t have to cost the earth. Frito Lay spent millions on their advertising, but the $500 ‘crash the super bowl’ winning entry from JD Burningham was at least as well received as the much more expensive offerings. How was this possible? Crowdsourcing.

There is one thing being overlooked here however; the Godaddy commercial had a strong incentive to drive visitors to their website. I thought that was pretty smart.

I liked this one better than the others.

“Not so. I am an expert in marketing and I call tell you for a fact that Joan left an indelible mark in everyone’s memory.”

    @Robert (expert in marketing)

That’s the problem, it was .co’s chance to leave an indelible mark in everyone’s memory…not Joans

UNLESS the additional .co reg numbers due to the ad prove otherwise then it may not have worked out as intended – but nobody seems very forthcoming with those figures as of yet.

..yes, I know its early days 🙂

The Joan Rivers ad is gaining some traction in the MSM – perhaps it will have a more positive impact that most, including myself, initially thought.

Yes if you want to win awards godaddy didn’t win, but I bet they got new customers. Plus domainers may have also taken advantage of their promotion.

Yet – as someone else mentioned before Name.com has your .co’s for $7.77

  60. Soc.TV says

ccTLD’s are a-rockin – these sales are from last week (From DNJournal):

Soc.io sold for $2500 – site is up.
Jamaica.nl sold for $12,455 – site is up.
    Work.io sold for $4,500
    TechZone.in sold for $3,975
    LuxuryEstate.it sold for $2,740

What’s my point? If the above, obscure ccTLD’s are selling at these prices, .co will do very well considering the marketing dollars behind it.

It’s the morning after. The blogosphere is abuzz with excitement about Super Bowl Sunday, and EnCirca is tickled to join in and offer special pricing for registering a dot-co domain. EnCirca’s promotional pricing for a dot-co registration is $11.99 for the first year and will be available until Friday, February 11, 2011. Dot-co, an old domain name, has reinvented itself and is now available for unrestricted international use.
The explosive rise of dot-co as a popular domain is in large part because many businesses have brands and trademarks that they would like to register but have been taken in .com. But, even big businesses like Twitter and Overstock.com have gotten in on the deal and have become early dot-co adopters.

“There have been over 600,000 dot-co registrations in less than a year,” says Tom Barrett, President of EnCirca. “Names are going fast and businesses should protect their brands and trademarks.”

The suffix dot-co is universally recognized as an abbreviation for company. In a dot-co registry survey, 75 percent of respondents equated dot-co with “company,” “corporation,” or “commerce.” In fact, nearly 50 countries use dot-co as a second-level domain name to depict just that, such as co.uk and co.jp.

Whatever naysayers say, the stats and numbers speak for themselves.

    LLL. CO

all gone in less than 24 hours after the super bowl.

    Just incredible

    Sad but very newsworthy

I believe LLL.CO valuations are now going to go through the roof.

Would not be surprised to see $100,000 sale within the year.

I understand that you are saying all 3 letter .co are gone.

You don’t have to post another comment on it every 15 minutes.

LLL are the first things domainers target.

There are LLL sellouts in other secondary extensions like US/BIZ. It doesn’t mean virtually anything for their reseller value though.

Not every three letter .Co is registered.

There are many that are not registered yet not reserved such as net.co.

I ran the full database a month or so ago and found several hundred of the letter domains in this state of limbo.

I asked the .Co registry about these and the answer I got where these are domains that we in a landrush auction but did not complete for non-payment.

So technically since I know for a fact there are quite a few of these out there I couldn’t say they are taken, just unavailable.

  70. Robert Cline says

    February 9, 2011 at 3:04 pm

    @MHB

There are few LLL.CO s that are reserved by the registry which are basically super premiums that will go for $1Million plus but the

rest have now been registered in full.

    This is huge news that

    must be reported IMHO.

    NET.CO

    and

    COM.CO

are specially designated extensions in themselves:

    Like I registered BILL.COM.CO

You cannot consider these as ever being registerable. .CO has made them into extensions in their own right.
