According to a press release this morning the domain name Gibraltar.com is for sale.
Besides being part of one of the most famous phrases of all time, “the Rock Of Gibraltar”, its a territory with a small population of just under 30,000 people but gets according to the PR 10.3 million visitors a year.
Gibraltar is located on the southwestern tip of Europe and is a self-governing UK overseas territory.
“Gibraltar also is a low tax jurisdiction, VAT-free and its economy is robust and vibrant, making it a very attractive tax haven”
“”Geo domains or geographic domains are among the most prized and coveted of all domains in the industry. ”
“The value of generic geographic domain names has increased substantially the last couple of years as the search industry continues to evolve.”
“Geographic domain names are now one of the most valuable class of assets in a rapidly changing internet landscape.”
“With millions of dot com domains registered the world over, geographic domain names are taking center stage as local search and advertising plays a much bigger role in the growth of the world wide web.”
If you have interest in the domain you can click here to send the owner a message.

Just to be clear I do not own that domain and typically do not use the blog to promote the sale of my own domains.

@MHB,
I know – was just kidding.

Imagine for a moment it DID include 48/8.
Would GAAP – Generally Accepted Accounting Practices dictate how that ASSET would be accounted for in the domain transfer ?
How does ICANN account for /8 transfers to the RIRs ?
Brad says
This is no Russia.com or Brazil.com. It is grossly overpriced IMO.

@Brad,
I concur, completely. Based upon my limited knowledge of what makes a domain valuable, along with 20 years in sales, marketing, and branding – I’d place a realistic value on this domain at around $40,000.
Good luck to the seller.

So then why do you step forward …

Read between the lines, son.

The vast majority of those visitors per year will be day trippers from Spain to check out the rock. The place is tiny, I don’t think there’s even 10 hotels in Gib.
No surprise who already owns therockofgibraltar.com though, I’m not so sure Kevin Ham is the man that owns the Internet, I think he shares it with FS 😉

Well, at your suggestion i read between the lines …
and what i saw is what i first saw, and you have confirmed it …
that is, you have no expertise as you admitted and you are just
trying to hustle the price down of someones very valuable domain
with BS as you do daily to to the flea market crowd on Ebay ..
Big Cheese you are out of your league on here …
best stick to what you do know all about …
hustling and BS simple minds on Ebay.
The Big Cheese says
@Landon,
I’m not attempting to hustle anyone’s price down; but rather, I’m pointing out what is obvious to anyone who knows anything about branding, marketing, and in this case, geography. The domain in question is grossy over-priced and won’t even sell for 1/3 of the asking price. Wanna’ make a side bet, big guy?
The Big Cheese says
I could MAYBE see a financial services company buying this domain, but not for the asking price. The problem with this domain for this asking price is the following (from my perspective):
1. Gibraltar itself is too small for a travel site to be erected around this domain, again, at the asking price – the entire GDP of Gibraltar is only $600m pounds.
2. The word “Gibraltar” doesn’t flow and to the average, barely able to spell person, they’ll maybe hear the domain in an ad or on TV, and you’ll get people trying to spell in with either “ar”, “er”, or “or” at the end of the name – it’s just a tough word for the AVERAGE person to spell.
The only logical buying that I can see is the government of Gibraltar, but I’m guessing this pitch has already been made and wasn’t successful. Other than that, it’s a cool domain and I’m sure someone will do something interesting with it someday. Best of luck to the seller.

but the top domain should be Gibraltar.co.uk

I’ll start the bidding there.
$40,000 offered.

Seriously, maybe the ask is a bit high (or maybe not, if someone wants it bad enough), but this is a XXX,XXX domain.

Hmmm, that ain’t ever gonna happen
It was bought for $360,000 back in 2007 …somehow I don’t think he’ll let it go for 40k 😉

__My_Ad_Center__ says
if we consider that it has less than 29,000 inhabitants probably the right price of the domain is under $10,000
Earthquake.WS says
I hand-reg’d this domain (Earthquake.WS) for $9 today at Dynadot. I’d value this as being worth more than Gibraltar.com – yes, I am serious.
– EWS
Earthquake.WS says
Ok, not really serious; just trying to illustrate a point. If someone actually paid $360K for the domain in question, they WAY overpaid (IMHO).

Just a quick bit of information for you all:

The HEART of the online gaming industry in Europe is based out of Gibraltar, with the likes of bet365, william hill, partygaming, 888, bwin and the list goes on, having their main hubs here.
Fastest growing offshore finance centre in Europe as well, with corporation tax rates ranging from 0-10% p.a. All major banks, private, retail and investment are now based over here.
