I just read an article on MediaPost, on the Holiday Shopping Report for Q4 2010 and got all excited over all the extra money we will be making off of our PPC pages.
“On average, consumers spent 20.7% year-over-year in the first half of Q4 2010 and conversion rates rose 28.7%, compared with the same time period in the previous year”
The report also said that the cost per click (CPC) continues to rise.
“On Google, CPCs are up nearly 13% year-on-year, compared with a 4% uptick on Yahoo and Bing.”
“Retailers with multichannel marketing strategies increased their U.S. search spend 36.7% year-on-year in 2010, compared with the first half of Q4 2009”
Wow reading this you would think our revenues would be skyrocketing.
How’s this report working out for you?
For me not so good.

Is the current state of domains; evolve, sell cheaper, or be eaten alive by registration fees?
Aron - XF.com says
Well, for adwords (Buying PPC) I can tell that it IS going up.
For adsense (selling PPC) I can’t tell anything.
So, yeah — that seems fair. (rolleyes)

While some might think the rise will stop for Google on PPC income. I say the rise has just begun.
More and more slowmo businesses are turning online and they all want to be on the first page of search. During the next 3 years there will be a battle for best positions in search/paid search. The numbers which Google will be presenting, will be unbelievable IMHO.

I agree with Duane, the demand will be insane for first page search, so much so that Google will charge for every single position and pixel on that first page. There will be no such thing as “organic” search on the first page anymore. When this happens, not if, but when this happens — KABOOM !!!! Demand for quality traffic, and not so qulaity traffic, and the domains themselves, will be out of sight. To some degree the insane demand will spill over into domains from search, just out of the need to “find” more traffic. Domainers stand to prosper greatly.
If all us domain investors can all hold on to our great generic domains then any one of us with a handful of nice generics will make a lot of bank or have a fat river of cash rolling in on to the way of wealth.
I’m obviously looking beyond parking and PPC, but as the the actual demand from end users. In it’s current state parking domains looks like it is literally dying. Soon there will be tumbleweeds coming through my parked pages, LOL.
I’ve been watching and participating in this market since 1995 and I am now more bullish on good domains than ever, but just due to what I see happening in the next few years. We will all soon forget about parking’s demise once this kicks in, but can you as a domain investor bridge the gap between falling parking revenues and rising end user demand? That is the question every domainer should ask. If you can you will prosper greatly IMHO.

For those using “Parking Managers” that split your traffic among other real Parking companies think about this fact:
Between your “Click” (Yes you own the domain the originator) and the advertiser there is 3 intermediaries the Pie gets split in 4 and to add insult to injury you are not allowed to know how much each one is getting , the “Zero transparency factor” could be considered “Unfair business practice” and or Anticompetitive in just about any other Industry but it’s worth taking a look…

My cost per click has gone from 5 cents to 81 cents in 6 years. It will continue to rise. Adwords will only get stronger.
My earnings per click will not rise because the rise in rates are for Google search sponsored results and not adsense/affiliate sites. Those rates have not changed in 6 years. I spend $x,xxx per month on adwords and have owned trafficked sites with adsense for 2 years.

BFitz says
@ Landon White
LOL. The point is adsense/parking rates have not gone up because the folks buying the ads do not see those outlets as “quality.” Please don’t bash me now about direct nav being the best, yada, yada, yada… I am not expressing my opinion. I am speaking from years of experience and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on PPC for my restaurants as well as networking with fortune 500 PPC managers. “The best” traffic for PPC is the traffic who type the desired keyword into Google and click search. To be a sponsored result there is the most expensive cost per click and always will be. Google incentivizes advertisers to advertise on “affiliate sites” already by offering lower rates. If they charged higher rates per click on affiliate sites (our sites with adsense) there would be even less traffic/income for publishers. This is free market capitalism at work. Advertisers want to be on the trusted Google page. They do not want to be on sites where they have no idea what the content is next to their ad/brand. Think about how many crap sites there are out there with incorrect content. Businesses with a brand image they want to protect will not let that brand be associated with such sites. So Google search rates will climb and affiliate/adsense sites’ rates will not move.
@KoreaWar2 Bing and Yahoo have always had rates that are well below Google. The only way they can compete is to increase their share of search, hence all the traditional advertising on TV for Yahoo.

I would prefer to advertise on Facebook, but, unfortunately, they still doesn’t allow to choose the FB pages where I want to shown my ad
You Know Me says
@BFitz — The reason the quality is not there in parking is because Google and Yahoo have been laundering trash traffic in with the good, generic traffic in order to increase the overall income.
Google has done studies on direct navigation and shown it to convert about 3:1 over search engine search.
Search engine search comprises many people still in the exploring stage of a purchase cycle, whereas direct navigation traffic is comprised of people knowing what they want and being closer to the sale.
I suggest you revist your ad outlay and try to hone in on the good traffic to be had, otherwise you are throwing the baby out with the bath water.
BFitz says
@You Know Me
I am reporting the facts. if G could charge advertisers more they would. When a business sets up an ad campaign, suggested cost per click for affiliate/content site is less then 10% of the CPC for G,Y or B search. Why? Because that is what the market will pay. It would be different if G was charging advertisers 82 cents and paying out 3 cents. They are not, they are charging 10% of the CPC number reported by estibot and others which I don’t believe many domainers understand. I literally set up a campaign on Bing today. Suggested CPC for Yahoo and Bing was 80 cents and affiliate/content was 5 cents. Can’t get more real time than that.
BFitz says
Also, I increased my CPC for the content network from 5 to 15 cents and Adcenter estimated 1 more click per month. One, thats how little demand there is from paying advertisers when you increase CPC 200% on the content/affiliate network. Had I done that on the search my traffic would have doubled. Restaurants are among the highest searched industries so there is plenty of search volume.
