How Is Your Blog Doing? TechCrunch Sells For $25 Million

September 28, 2010 by Michael Berkens

According to several reports the blog TechCrunch has sold to AOL for “only” $25 Million.

TechCrunch has become a go to source for ground breaking internet news, and we hope that continues somehow despite the apparent sale to a huge mainstream media company.

My blog is doing very well–thank you very much for asking

As you know, when someone bought myspace or techcrunch or bankrate, their sites become so BS.
It loses the “personal” touch–remember myspace.

AOL also owns Engadget.com and they didnt mess it up when they bought it. hopefully they wont screw up TechCrunch either. TechCrunch is one of the top 5 blogs in the world. Mashable is rumored to be valued at over $100 million and so is Huffington Post. How could this sell for only $25 million. Was there stock involved on top of the $25 m?

Well, my blog just started this year; it took me a bit to create my own code, because I’m a stinker that way.

But, uh, ArsTechnica.com and IntoTomorrow.com are the ways to go for tech news. TechCruch.com was okay, though.

    😉

Just to add to the real conversation, though, if I was to buy a blog, and the people did not come with it, the value falls pretty quickly.

others say the TC’s selling price was only $5M

however, in the past, we have seen many other websites sold at higher prices

Techcrunch doesn’t sell just the website. It has also Techcrunch Disrupt which is one of the most known startup conference in the world (where startups are launching). That is also very valuable.

The team will continue with the new Techcrunch at least 3 years and that includes the owner of the site.

Techcrunch does $10 milion/year revenue with about $3,5 million profit. So, selling the site for about 10x the profit isn’t that bad.

You should eyeballing at this sale which happened 2-3 years ago: http://thenextweb.com/2008/10/04/financial-blog-bankaholiccom-acquired-for-a-mere-15-million/ (and that didn’t have a team behind or a conference)
