Just a little over a week ago RickLatona.com announced he was canceling the TRAFFIC Hong Kong show due in large part to the number of domain shows this year:
“The simple fact of the matter is that we are in a cottage industry.”
“The domain world is small and it can’t sustain so many companies fighting over attendees. So, I’ll bow out.”
So its interesting that 2011 is already setting up as a busy conference schedule in the domain world.
The DomainRoundTable.com is being held in the Bahamas On March 1-4.
The ICANN meeting is being held in San Francisco from March 14th-18th and TRAFFIC announced yesterday that they will be holding a “pre-ICANN show in San Francisco.
Since the ICANN meeting runs Monday-Friday, the TRAFFIC show would either have to be held on the weekend before or starting mid week, the week before, maybe as early as starting on March 8th.
So if your planning on attending all the events like I am, get your frequent flier miles warmed up. For those east coasters like myself the best piece of advice I can give you is get familiar with Virgin America, it will make your east/west coast travels a lot nicer.

T.R.A.F.F.I.C. ICANN RETREAT will be held immediately preceding ICANN at a location to be announced. It will be an opportunity for Domainers to go to the ICANN meeting with a unified voice.

Pretty soon there will be a Domain Conference Alcoholic–hi, my name is BullS and I am a Domain Alcoholic…

Many people will probably be bringing their yachts into San Francisco bay.
For the ones that fit under the Golden Gate bridge, Treasure Island will be
the Official Base. In the old days, the China Clippers landed there.

Yawn. More domain conferences regurgitating the same thing.
We all known the highlight of every event is the auction. So at what point is someone going to do something different and hold an event for domainers AND end users?? Like tie-in an event/auction with CES, or E3, or the National Realtor Conference, or with a dozens other mass events.
You’d get end users, domainers, greater press/media coverage (they’re already at CES, for example), etc.
Until that happens, I’ll pass.

I go to Domain Fest in LA every year, it’s the only way for me to get in the Playboy Mansion:) That is my favorite. To be honest, the conferences are great for meeting contacts, but you don’t really learn anything new. Still though, I have been to about 10-15 conferences over the years and always have a great time.
Thanks, Jim

In the past 24 hours, 3 major domain executives
told me they are planning to go to Traffic and Icann in March.
I’m sure the Traffic meeting in SF will be totally different
than any of the other Traffic meetings I’ve attended.
I am most likely attending Traffic and Icann in March.
FX says
i would rather go to bahamas for DRT than TRAFFIC.
Meyer says
FX, are you going to play or going to work?
🙂
With Traffic/Icann together, more can be accomplished.
NetJohn says
IMO it’s best not to have a conference totally or mostly straddling a weekend or having actual confrence sessions engulfing a weekend … most that have tried this did not have optimal attendance and auction results….and this comes from a guy who does not mind being there on a weekend.
Meyer says
John, I understand. And, normally I would agree with you.
But, this situation is very different than other domain meetings.
People attending the Icann meeting will probably arrive Sat or Sun
anyway.
I suspect what will happen regarding domainers, they will arrive friday
and depart early from Icann. 5 days of Icann might be a lot for
domainers to stomach.
Rick Schwartz says
Keep in mind that this show will be a “Retreat”
It is going to be different and folks will want to come for a special weekend preparing for ICANN and interacting with a number of members in a more relaxed atmosphere.
Break bread and break the ice and share some common visions with each other.
This is not the TRAFFIC anyone would expect.

Having a domain conference prior to an ICANN meeting is a great way to get more domainers to see how ICANN spends our tax dollars that they refuse to admit comes from us.
The Europeans had a domain conference before the ICANN PAris meeting (in the same hotel) – a great success.
>5 days of Icann might be a lot for domainers to stomach.
5 days? Try 5 HOURS.

Also would be good to zero in on ICANN like heat-seeking missiles….to get more concrete explanations (or at least reprimand them face-to-face) for them looking the other way and/or enabling Verisign to conduct their monopolistic base pricing practices on domains. The last 2 years have been deflationary; prices on many things (not including Gold – LOL) have been going down and or remained stable….yet Verisign keeps raising prices without hesitation…and ICANN seems to have a “Laissez-Faire” attittude or MO on this.
Above and beyond the ICANN meeting, there’s no doubt that San Fran is a good city for a domain conference …. plus ther’s better odds than most to get some more VC’s and tech titans to the show…or at least an auction…since there is plethora of both within a 45 mile radius

Have you observed how Uncle Sam, the United Nations, the ITU and the IGF have “attempted” to do that ?
