1st Land Rush Auction Sales Reported From Closed .Co Auctions

August 22, 2010 by Michael Berkens

The .Co auctions from the Land Rush application started a couple of weeks ago and now we have the first reported sales.

This information comes from various sources including the .Co registry.

A few disclaimers:

Many of the auctions are still going on, even those that started at the beginning.

Under the bidding system, if a new bid is received in the final day of the auction which beats the then high proxy bid on the domain, the auction gets extended for another full day.

So for example, there are auctions that I’m in, that have been extended more than a week already.

That means there are not as many results as you would think by this point due to the extending of the auctions.

Moreover most of the higher priced sales have not closed due to the auction getting extended.

Also the .CO registry doesn’t look like they are going to report sales of explicit adult terms or pretty much any adult domains.

The .CO registry is also hypersensitive to bang on well know trademarks of global brands and will not be reporting such sales that will most likely be lost in UDRP’s.

With that having been said here are the results of some closed .CO land rush auctions:

A positive sign to see some two-worders in the list. Good times.

I admit…they are very good prices for a TLD that’s ONLY a .COpy of .com 🙂

    Prediction…
    http://TheBigLieSociety.com
will SPIN this as a NEW gTLD to compete with .COM

Then, the real curve ball will be IDN ccTLDs like .CO which looks like .CO

Many American vISPs will default out IDN ccTLDs and offer those as an “up-sell”

The SPIN machines will be busy for years.

@Christian: you needed to apply during the land rush in order to be able to bid.

So the registry’s happy to earn big dollars from their sale, just not gonna tell how much, LOL. Why allow their sale in the first place?

    yep
the gei.co it’s an accident waiting to happen, unless of course it was the company making a defensive move.

funny how .me gets smacked down, the .tv extension been around for 10 years and doing well but domainers in usa clueless, people critized the .mx extension with american words by well respected domainers but chasing on the .co

very hard to find a not yet registered .CO that means something

  16. Donny says

    August 23, 2010 at 1:47 am

I think it is so funny that people think they will be able to keep names like gei.co or cis.co, or even cost.co

    Not going to happen.

  17. em says

    August 23, 2010 at 4:57 am

Domain hacks are pretty tough, litigiously speaking. That dot in there makes things difficult. Who is to argue that “cost” in cost.co doesnt just mean a website where you can find the price of something? I would not like to be the judge who has to decide that. TM issues like costco.com are pretty clearcut, otherwise….

Where are these auctions taking place?

  22. MHB says

    August 23, 2010 at 9:59 am

    Bruce

These auctions are taking place on a closed platform open to only those who placed a land rush application on certain .co domains.

You can read more about it here

    http://www.thedomains.com/2010/07/31/co-landrush-notices-go-out-to-applicants/

    and here:

    http://www.coauctions.co/

The auctions are “powered” by pool but are not in pool.com system as such but separately run by the registry similar to the .me auctions when that extension rolled out

  23. Tom C says

    August 24, 2010 at 1:26 am

As we hoped these prices are going to continue to rise. The landrush auction results are only going to drive additional confidence is those who were sitting on the fence.

Once some of these sites are built out and marketing plans have been deployed, then will we start to see some even larger sales.

Great for those who are getting in early!

    Good luck to all
