So I got my panties in a wad over two previously “premium” .TV domains which dropped over the last two days and now carry an annual one time premium fee for registration.
The two domains are Rape.Tv and Incest.Tv.
I’m amazed that someone actually put the premium label on them and put a premium price on them.
and at that a public company.
Yes as you know VeriSign owns the Dot Tv registry.
By putting a “premium” label on these domains VeriSign is charging premium prices for each domain, and thereby putting extra dollars in their pocket for the registration of these domains.
Very troubling domains.
For a domain to have become a premium domain, someone had to put the label on it.
Someone had to manually look at the domain and say hey this is a “premium” domain and then assign a price or a price category to it.
As the registry, VeriSign also had the right to just not release the domain either initially or now that it dropped.
Would Verisign treat ChildPorn.Tv as a premium domain as well?
Rape.Tv is priced at over $1,800 and Incest.Tv is priced over $500.
The regular registration price of a .TV domain is generally $20.
Will the shareholders like to know that a small portion of their dividend checks includes revenue from the sale of these domains?
Basically Verisign a public company selected these domains as being exceptionally valuable and is looking to get paid a premium for their registration.
I call “No Bueno” on this one.
Yes I know I own adult domains but I’m not a registry nor a public company and I wouldn’t touch these domains, with the proverbial 10 foot pole.
I’m glad to see that no domainers picked these up on the drop and hope that they stay unregistered.
If Verisign had any sense or corporate responsibility they would never released these domains in the first place instead holding them as reserved domains.
John Berryhill says
Either domain would be valuable to a publisher of victim counseling or legal resources.
By themselves, the domains don’t suggest any particular use.
Tim says
Who wants to be on TV (or a video) for rape counseling? I can’t see the value in that.
I do know that a lot of these porn tube sites show ads at the bottom or side where a woman is getting beaten around, suggesting some kind of struggle/rape. I guess there is a tranche of folks that get off on that……pretty disgusting really.
However, maybe those sites convert to sales well or they would not be on the porn tube sites.
Jon says
I agree with John Berryhill above, the domain names suggest nothing, legal/government entities may have interest in those domains.
Too much fuss over nothing, sorry.
Andy Kelly says
I feel that .tv makes these words sounds like some kind of entertainment !
Other extensions seem appropriate to me ie they should / must be put to good use
So I agree with the thread starter on this one.
I saw that rape tv was dropping soon but I for one wouldn’t backorder it / like most domainers. No doubt some in our industry wouldn’t hesitate.

Disturbing.

I think these so called “premium” are software/dictionary generated rather than manually…
Richard says
I agree with domo, we can only hope that these were suggested or randomly picked from software, or there is one sick puppy approving these “premiums”. no bueno fo sho

Who are you kidding??
Get off your high horses
If these same keywords were in .com in expired drop auctions there would be – guaranteed – a bunch of several newly created bidder IDs (anonymity) & the winning bid up in the high $x,000, if not more.
That suggests these are “premium” ie significantly more than reg fee.
The market votes with their wallet.
Andy Kelly says
High horse? LOL
Really? It’s called a personal choice
Some folks will make $$$$ out of anything, others have a few standards, others have a very high moral code they like to live by. It’s called choice.
Domain Kink says
You are hilarious. These names are nothing compared to the ones your bretheren have been engaged in registering and monetizing for more than a decade. Get off your high horse.

Had the domains been available for $ 20, they would have been scooped up in an instant. And, probably flipped a couple times til they reached a price outside of domainers wholesale price range.
It is called ‘price elasticity’.
Some of us do not want to be connected to certain domains.
And, some domainers will acquire them for its quick profit potential.
Troy says
Are there really all that different from the domains that many of the biggest in our industry have been making money on for a while now?
Leonard Britt says
I saw that this morning DrugDealer.tv was dropping. I know someone who works for the DEA so sent them an email (note I did not register the domain)- who knows the DEA might could use that to post stories on narcotics investigations and arrests of suspected drug dealers.

at the end of the day domains are a business period. and a legitimate biz at that.rape and incest are generic words and used often.now on to the uses do you have any clue how popular incest is in the latino community?have you ever investigated this before? its a huge problem.
what about the date rate drug? the us had to ban this drug now it is smuggled into the us from mexico.the bottom line is that rape and incest are huge industries in the us and world wide.in addition a large amount of businesses revolve around these words.verisign raised the prices of .com and extended the brand to .tv.i also so a law and order episode that used the domain child rape and was isp overseas and was earning 30k a month.the domain owner leased out lines and stated he had no idea what was on the website it was password protected. the law and order team stated exactly what you just stated above.as for public companies direct tv was earning 50 million a yr from porno movies stated on their public financials when asked about these porno movies direct tv had no commet.
if its legal and there is a market there will be biz oppertunities.
and you must remember some people have zero morals when dollars are involved….
its ugly out there…

VERISIGN is just another “domainer.”
MHB says
RL
That of course is the point VeriSign is not “just another domainer” they are a public company that was awarded a virtual monopoly to run the .com and .net registry and run other registries as well, including the .tv registry.
They should not be judged by what a domainer would do or could do.
They have a market cap of over $4.5 BILLION dollars.
They should know better.
RL says
Most of registrars today “forgot” their “greater purpose” and match the definition of “domainer”. One has to look at the definition of “domaining” to see the perfect match. It’s not only that their asctivities are all for profit: some activities are legally and ethically controversial. For exampole ICANN has created best opportunities for typosquatting, most prominently exhibited by “.co”. Could all this be stopped, considering Verisign’s cap of $4.5 billion? Why some registries managed to keep their pricing the same, e.g. Nominet and do not get involved in this kind of practices? I mean not yet …
MHB says
RL
ICANN has nothing to do with .Co.
The country of Colombia like all sovereign nations have the right to have their own ccTLD, the country code was not determined or approved by ICANN and ICANN generally has not authority over ccTLD’s
Stuart Lawley says
If you scan the .com root zone file you will find some VERY disturbing regular names in .com that Versign is making their stock $7 a year from, involving sex and minors. Worse , much worse. As you say , a Public company. .XXX will have policies in place regarding regarding terms designed to appeal to pedophiles.
Makis.TV says
I tend to agree with John Berryhill post.
Domains are just words or phrases, what we should lookout is each domain content.
In general I see words more as a figure* than a real meaning but thats more philosophy than domaining.
