Yes the artist formerly known as Prince, and currently known as Prince once again, said in an interview today that “The Internet is Completely Over”
Prince also told England’s Daily Mirror:
“I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.”
“The Internet’s like MTV,”
“At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated”
Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good.”
“They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you”
Prince its not 1999 anymore

I love Prince’s early music, in fact I used to date the sister of one of his dancers, but when is the last time he put out a terrific album. He’s cutting his own throat by denying iTunes distribution rights. Prince is dead, long live Prince.

It’s one thing to try sound artistically cool and it’s another to inadvertently sound irrelevant. The bottom line is that man is too brilliant to say something so dopey.

My point is that I believe he was saying it for effect. Regardless, it was dopey.

Prince probably doesn’t need to sell another tune in his lifetime, he must be set up based on all he accomplished in the 80’s and early 90’s. Maybe he just wants to be controversial and make some headlines, but really itunes give an artist access to such a large audience.
BullS says
He must be smoking something stinko but let put it this way, the more s/he opens his/her mouth about the internet, the more publicity the internet gets.
The power of reverse psychology.

“Prince, its not 1999 anymore”
Priceless.

Let’s face it. This guy talks out of a paper ass.

I think it could have been his stab at trying to create a new scene or EVEN a new following, and it very well could be a marketing ploy which he conjured up with his posy..
Guys, there probably are people out there who may feel the same way bout the tinternet .. ๐ (although a minority and probably penny less hippies)
For me, and this is a personal feeling. Prince died in early 2000 when he became a former image of himself – very sad to see a man “performer” climbing up his own arse! And such a good musician too ..
RIP: Prince

I can just see him making that statement while wearing a woman’s dress around his house…..LOL, which he is known to do.

VERY CLUELESS statement! Perhaps he had WAY too much to drink or smoke! Obviously if he did say this his head is DEFINITELY where the sun don’t shine!!!

Prince might (inadvertently) be on to something in terms of public opinion. By this I mean that the public Internet must transform itself. Consider, for example, the poll on THIS page (above) asking how many viewers will visit the .XXX TLD. Here is what might be important about the Prince observation that “the Internet is over”.
Of course the public Internet in NOT over. However, the reason for the press play on the comment is NOT the comment itself, but the source. Prince may be completely clueless about anything whatsoever about the Internet, except his own interest. The comment nonetheless receives considerable press attention, including attention from the business press and, thus, public attention to the comment, BECAUSE of the source.
That in mind, let’s have a look at the concept of “source” in terms of a variety (perhaps the majority?) of content sources that define the contemporary Web.
Specifically, the Web has reached a tipping point. It either continues as it is, which is to say that whatever its good points, and they are numerous and prolific, the public Internet has ALSO and nonetheless transformed into a bottom feeding frenzy of fraud, pornography, identity theft, spam, unwanted advertising, misdirected navigation, and other assaults on Internet end users.
The Web either stays that way, meaning that the “Internet” as we prefer to understand it as a public utility ALSO incorporates far too much bottom feeding and, thus, it either accommodates change to avoid the bottom feeding or it might well be “over” in the sense of a tipping point.
Despite his apparent ignorance Prince is asking for change. That particular request from that particular source has resonated and, thus, it might well reflect contemporary public opinion to which we should pay close attention.
He might be on to something.
Cartoonz says
“transformed” into pornography?
It is a sad but very true fact that pornography built the net in a lot of ways…

Well, if you read his complete statement and not what just news media outlets are reporting. I believe Prince said “internet is dead for musicians like him”
Meaning there is little to no benefit for having his music distributed among the internet through sources like Apple’s software and so many other networks.
Last time he banned Apple and other internet venues to distribute his album, he still sold MILLIONS of copies. This is simply a “shockwave” statement mostly to get press coverage. I mean look how far it has gotten, even to the domain community, TMZ, MySpace, Facebook, its freaking everywhere.
The Music Void says
To be honest, Princeโs decision deserves great respect. Iโd rather see an artist try something new and fail, then replicate the actions and thought-processes of the herd. Itโs what the industry needs.
