Included in the VeriSign 1Q 2010 Domain Name Industry Brief, is a a new study by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. Titled “The Internet Economy 25 Years After .com: Transforming Commerce & Life,” the study draws on a variety of research sources to gauge the commercial impact of the Internet, in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the first .com domain name registration.
The report measures the reach of e-commerce.
The ITIF estimates that the annual global economic benefits of the commercial Internet equal $1.5 trillion, more than the global sales of medicine, investment in renewable energy, and government investment in R&D, combined. ITIF also estimates that, assuming e-commerce continues to grow just half as fast as it grew between 2005 and 2010, then by 2020, it will add $3.8 trillion to the global economy.
Among its findings:
In Europe, the percentage of online shoppers grew by 85% between 2004 and 2009.
Experience with online shopping in developing countries is rapidly catching up with that seen in more developed regions.\
63% of Internet users in Latin American and 70% of users in Asia Pacific countries have made at least one purchase online, for example, compared to 85% of Internet users in North America and
Europe.
The ITIF found Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States lead the rest of the world in shopping, selling, and doing business
online.
The country with the highest percentage of adult citizens who have shopped online is Japan, with 52%.

At VeriSign’s San Francisco Gala two weeks ago, all attendees were given this ITIF “The Internet Economy, 25 Years After .com”.
It’s basically 80 pages stuffed full of incredible stats, figures and research.
What an incredible resource for everyone to reference moving forward.
ITIF should be properly “thanked” for this extensive research.
It really is helpful and remarkable what they put together.

Hello Mike,
The ITIF report is incredibly good news for all foundational Address holders, especially the .com registrations. Incredible as this report is we feel that it is missing the mark in future growth projections. We feel the figures will be much higher because of the rapid convergence of printed ads to digital ads. Just take a look at your local newspapers and gauge the depth and quality of their content. They are pitifully lacking content to the point that the only newspapers to buy anymore of any quality are the New York Times and USA today.
This convergence is gathering steam and will crescendo somewhere near 2015. This convergence will catalyze web commerce as if it were on steroids. The best is yet to come and young start up companies created today will be huge benefactors.
Gratefully,
Jeff
