Now that Canon announced it will seek its own extension, the question becomes is Canon just the first of many Fortune 500 companies that will apply for its own gTLD or just one of the few that will apply?
You can vote on the poll on the right and of course leave any comments below.

Canon definitely won’t be the only one.

I believe that companies will register their own brand TLDs, spend a bundle of money advertising the hell out of them, use them for their websites and promotions, and simply use their current gTLD and ccTLD domains as redirects. With their own TLDs, companies control everything–no chance of cyber or typo squatting. Consumers will eventually get the message that if a site ends in a trusted brand TLD, it will be okay (as long as the company isn’t stupid enough to give or sell domains to their customers).
This, of course, will be bad news to the big guys who own xxx,xxx domains, which is why there is an atmosphere of fear about these new TLDs.
But here’s the bottom line: it WILL happen, and probably sooner than you think.
The future for GENERIC TLDs is still uncertain because you will still have the cybersquatting issues. Besides, what criteria will determine which company should get .cars, or will it be a consortium of care companies? It will get nasty. I think that there may be lawsuits over generic terms, especially in the U.S., where TM law is still fairly strict.

Brand TLDs raise a myriad of economic issues and I would have thought that ICANN as bottom up stakeholder driven organization would have been keen to encourage community discussion on those issues prior to issuing statements about new gTLDs being on track.
Something is not quite right when the GNSO / Staff are able disregard such concerns in much he same fashion as they did with the removal of Vertical Separation requirement from the DAG. A change which was overturned by The Board last week but only after the recently launched “recommendation only” PDP by the GNSO.
A PDP which incidentally would probably never have seen the light of day had the GNSO not been recently reformed (given the voting patterns of the contracted and non contracted houses).

a completely useless domain… probably it will have just ONE domain registered: canon.canon 🙂

Do not agre that corporate TLD’s hurt big domain owners in any way. It would be the generic with the potential. How does .canon hurt Frank Schilling ? He should not be owning any domains with Canon or .COKE or .DELL in the first place. If he did they would never buy anything from him and would UDRP the name. So no IMO corporate Tld’s are no bother for a big domain holder. The owner of this blog is a big owner and he does things right, .canon would not affect him in any way. Again IMO

I’ve said this before.
WHEN – not if – global cos have their own extension, eventually it will be 2 tier namespace:
.
.com + everything else
where .com & the rest will be sought after by mainly smaller/medium cos & individuals
.com of global cos will eventually redirect to eg. home.canon
@ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Use some imagination & engage that thing between your ears for once (you sure talk a lot of schit):
tv.canon
printers.canon
copiers.canon
etc
