Talk about having some bad timing.
The domain ChileEarthQuake.com dropped just 2 days after the 8.8 earthquake rocked Chile.
Today the expired domain was auctioned off and sold on SnapNames.com
While we always discourage people from registering domains that take advantage of any disasters we couldn’t help but notice the irony that this domain was not renewed by its former owner and then lost the domain just 2 days after the disaster struck.
Hopefully the new owner will do the right thing and send the traffic to the Red Cross or some other reputable charity, however right now its just parked.

Oddly enough, this name was registered to Protopixel Pty Ltd (http://domain-history.domaintools.com/?page=details&domain=chileearthquake.com&date=2010-02-28). It’s odd because Protopixel Pty Ltd is owned by Dark Blue Sea (http://www.darkbluesea.com/announcements/15_DBS_ANNUAL_REPORT_2004.pdf), so one would assume they could have gotten this name back had they wanted to do so. I guess it would made sense to sell it via Snapnames than to monetize it with PPC links.
What was the sales price?

The domain sold for less than $500.

Hopefully the new owner will develop it into a philanthropic project… and not just for a flip.

He didn’t. Which is a shame. Both Snapnames and Protopixel Pty Ltd are domain squatters. Nice to know that Google is decreasing the value of their “investments” so quickly by decreasing the value of keywords in domain name. Bravo, Google.
