Following in Godaddy.com footsteps, the domain registrar CrazyDomains.com.au (also the owner of CrazyDomains.com) has hired Pamela Anderson to appear in commercials for its domain registrar services.
According to the blog, NextRound.com, the Australian based ICANN accredited domain registrar’s commercial featuring Pamela Anderson starting airing last week on Australian TV.
“The commercial debuted last week and is exponentially sluttier than anything Danica Patrick can produce.”
This strategy certainly worked for Godaddy, which came literally came from nowhere to become the number 1 registrar in the world with the help of a little sex appeal.
Pamela, like Danica for Godaddy, not only appears in the TV ads, but is on the front of the CrazyDomains site.
Of course Godaddy.com’ commercials aired during the Super Bowl, which at $3 Million a pop is bound to get exposure (pun intended) but don’t be surprised in the age of YouTube.com to see this strategy work once again and move Crazydomains.com up the domain registrar ladder, pretty quickly.
Crazydomains.com and CrazyDomains.com.au are owned by “AUST DOMAINS.COM.AU” which currently has over 35,000 domains under management.
Ok, I know your just want to see the commercial and as you would expect, its a little racer than American TV.
Click here, enjoy and register some domains.
I know
You love me.
Domain Investor says
OK, I forced myself to watch the whole commercial.

Lets not start any down-under jokes.
(whisper) When are they going to broadcast the next one?

Sex sells, surprise surprise… But she is like 40+ years old now, a has-been. Wonder how much she got paid 🙂
snicksnack says
I wonder how much that costs. In 35,000 domain as registrar is not too much profit, considering the price they charge.
I guess Pam just wanted to be in the press again.
btw: the frickin video doesn’t load for me.

Spoken like a man who hasn’t had sex with a 40 year old woman.
I’m trying to figure out how to say this delicately, but you are in for a pleasant surprise when you get older.
And that’s about as much as I’ll say about that.

Michael since this is a rather provocative post, I wanted to ask you something off topic. I recently picked up on the drop F*CK ME .TV. In looking to see the .com owner I see its you. If you can say does the name get offers and or traffic. I usually do not dabble in the area and only own two the other being MobilePorn.tv which does get a few uniques and some offers. I think for the name after .com .tv is the second best choice. Its brandable and adult goes with the .tv extension. If you cannot say anything no prob.

I will soon drive to the c of a called Australia to meet Pam-e-la!

Jon Berryhill,
lol – my thoughts exactly.

My wife loves you

Everything
Yes the domain in question is very valuable, get a lot of traffic and we have turned down offers for it regularly
Having said that I have no idea how that helps the .TV version.
everything.tv says
Thank you for the info Michael. It does not help the .tv, I just wanted to know what the .com was doing and appreciate the info. In the past knowing the .com info has helped with xx,xxx sales of .tv. When the name goes with .tv as I believe adult names do, it does help knowing that the .com is getting traffic and offer wise. Best of luck with your name.

Their message of using sex appeal and getting a “business” domain are a little disconnected. GoDaddy focuses their message not on business but “anyone” can get a web site. Important distinction. Remember sex does not “sell” but appeals. GoDaddy was dominating new registrations long before their first Super Bowl ad. The winning formula is cheap prices and name recognition. The sexy ads are just a branding/awareness trick used in an environment (US Television) where it is a novelty. If more than one player goes the same rout, all of it’s benefit and appeal is going to evaporate.
Alan says
Chip,
While your comments may be correct if everyone started doing it 2 companies is not everyone and there is certainly room left in this space for another plus everyone worldwide knows who Pamela Anderson is. The people GoDaddy pick – I have no idea who most of them are until GoDaddy launches ads.
Danica Patrick who? There is a large segment of the US who couldn’t name any driver in nascar including me.
Plus “Their message of using sex appeal and getting a “business” domain are a little disconnected. GoDaddy focuses their message not on business but “anyone” can get a web site. Important distinction”
maybe in the US. But the rest of the world people don’t really think sex is a bad topic as many americans pretend to think it is (yet still watch porn – yes, even diehard christians)
I think the entire point of these campaigns are to bring attention and having Pamela Anderson will work and bring the attention they need. The rest is up to them .. customer service, prices etc
MHB says
Alan
Danica is not a Nascar driver but in Indy car driver.
Alan says
Funny – see, I have no idea about this sport except the cars go fast 🙂

Alan:
My comments are only directed as an overall comment if they were to try to break into the US market with advertising, much like GoDaddy did. I have no idea if they want to stick with Australia only and what the advertising market looks like as it related to sex in Australia.
I will also grant that two companies does not an industry make, but when it comes to Domain companies in the eyes of the general public, it might. As far as the US public is concerned, GoDaddy is the only entity. Adding a new player in the market with a similar brand (Sexy Women/images, Funny Ads) dilutes both of their messages and more importantly makes them look like a copycat. The use of Danika Patrick or Pamela Anderson is really of little consequense. Danika has Sports Racing chops and Pamela has TV and “Sexy” fame. It helps to shape the content but the message is the same. Pamela’s more widespread fame just helps CrazyDomains get associated with Sexy in a more tangable way.
The point I was trying to make relating to using sex to sell to “Business Solutions” (CrazyDomains)vs. a more general, broad message of “Go here to get your cheap domain” (GoDaddy) is strictly a what works better to that audience. Yes Business decision makers are also members of a mass audience but this kind of message makes it hard to put that business message into context.
Let’s also not kid ourselves. Using sex to sell is more about the shock value than pulling at people’s heart(?!?) strings. Other countries are just more progressive about allowing it on tv and in public discourse. That is why humor is the primary platform.
All that being said, it could work for them if they are aggressive about promoting themselves, but that could work regardless of who their spokesperson is or if they went after a non-sexy message. If they just want to capture Australia and other non-GoDaddy markets, the question is moot. Just feel like if they were to invest that kind of $$, might have been able to carve out a better, and much bigger, chunk of the audiences attention if they went in a different direction.
Aron - Symbolics.com says
This is what they wanted… for us to talk about their company.
Success.
Without this ad, we’d never be having a discussion about
CrazyDomains.com.au
