It was a pretty busy 4 days over at NameJet.com during the holiday in the US.
The domain name ModelDirectory.com lead the pack selling for $16,665.
The domain seems to have had minimal traffic at best and seems like a huge price, but I’m sure one of you out there in the domain world can tell me why it was worth the price.
In some other notable sales:
Smallbusinesslaw.com sold for $12,211, another domain IMHO think went for more than it should have.
disposables.com went for $5,533
iDisplay.com sold for $4,360
TheOrganic.com sold for $4,250
internetkiosk.com sold for $3,433
CustodyAttorneys.com sold for $3,087 (I bought that one)
TheLocksmith.com sold for $2,779

Ditto your question on ModelDirectory.com. There is a real story behind many of these purchases. Many/most wind up behind masked whois.

modeldirectory.com: probably purchased by a spotty teen domainer who can now tell girls he is running a model agency!
I like smallbusinesslaw as it has many revenue possibilities, from legal forms to attorney directory, and small businesses are always looking for details on how to efficiently manage their legal needs. But I wouldn’t have paid that price for it myself.

I don’t know why, or who bought ModelDirectory.com – but I do see how this domain could be worth quite a lot in regards to development.
A pretty simple business model, where having an almost category defining name is important, is a subscription based site for aspiring/wannabe models.
Basically people who wants to be “discovered” pay a monthly subscription fee for a listing – this could somewhere between $10 and $50 a month depending on the details.
Charge them either by credit card or a mobile subscription (probably more likely to convert).
Advertise it to the right demographics on facebook and myspace, and I’m pretty sure it would be a decent and profitable business within a short time.
Obviously, if it shouldn’t end up being a typical subscription scam, the owner should also make sure that agencies etc. looking for models actually use the site.
The same could be done for aspiring actors – and most likely several other verticals like singers, “talents” etc.
One of the most important factors to succeed with such a site, is to make the prospective users believe and trust that the site is really worth being listed on and is going to get them a modeling career – in which regard I think the name plays a big role.

The only problem with ModelDirectory, com is that the model business has been decimated by the collapse of the adult industry.
Now there are underemployed porn stars invading the modeling realm driving down prices to where it does not make as much sense for a woman to consider being a model anymore…….unless you like to live in poverty.

Interesting comments Belmassio, I know adult is down but are these women who went from doing hardcore porn looking to be a fashion model ? Or are they looking at swimsuit model or lingerie model. Is there any stigma of being a pornstar ? Cannot imagine these women are getting Vogue or Victoria’s Secret. Although they are crossing over into Mainstream Movies, Katie Morgan has done a good job doing that.
Michael maybe fashionmodeldirectory.com was the buyer. Big site.

Well, everyone has another shot at it.
I just received notification that ModelDirectory.com is going to be re-auctioned. And, it is starting at $ 69.
I guess the initial buyer sobered up or defaulted?

Back to square one. 🙂

Wow
That was quick
Usually its a couple of weeks before a domain makes a return into an auction, 48 hours might be a world record
