Was com.cm available for auction?
You will reveal your dotCM acquisitions soon right?
MHB says
Tony
I’m not sure off hand if com.cm was available or not.
It may even be coming up for auction.
Once all the .cm auctions are done, which should a week from Tuesday, (no .cm auctions on the weekend) we will reveal what we picked up
snicksnack says
com.cm / co.cm / net.cm / edu.cm / are subzones managed by Netcom and therefore not available. gov.cm is also a subzone managed buy the local government and thus also not available.
Sten says
It makes no sense.
DomainersChoice says
what makes no sense ?
Tim Davids says
this will go down as bigger than .mobi as far as people saying “I can’t believe I spent that much money on this ” 🙂
DomainersChoice says
Some of the buyers have bought at TRAFFIC Amsterdam and in the Rick Latona online .CM auction and they have bought in this auction, so it might work out for some of them, some might overpay, but this you have in alomst every auction.
dcmike77 says
btw, goggle.cm is on auction now. 13 bidders it seems. just following up from my earlier comment
dcmike77 says
I wonder if google.cm made it to auction?
MHB says

Please report back with the results once the auction ends
David J Castello says
The speculators are keeping the market for this TLD alive. I doubt if the aftermarket for dotCM has more than a short life expectancy when the speculators realize that few, if any, dotCMs will make any real parking money and the potential to sell to endusers is nil . If that’s the case what’s the future market for this TLD? Speculators selling to speculators? Good luck. This may give us a window into how the new gTLDs will do – once the speculators are turned off the game is over for a non-legacy or low enduser-cc TLD.

“The highest sale today was for Yellowpages.com” – do you mind editing the post to make it “The highest sale today was for Yellowpages.cm”? You’ll be giving a few execs heart attacks at the AT&T yellowpages.com company. 🙂

Done
See the .cm typos even get to domainers
Brian Gilbert says
“more fools” Samir? A pretty harsh term from someone whom I’m guessing has no factual .cm data. I’ve got .cm data….both traffic and revenue. The folks buying .cms are no fools. Especially for those of us staying away from trademarks and staying within reasonable bid prices. Industry hype is definitely playing a part in the amount of auction participation and higher prices. However, we managed to land unemployment.cm today for $210 plus the $350 reg fee of course. Still, a nice purchase for our company since we already own unemployment.com don’t you think? Fools? I think not. Foolish prices….yeah…in some cases….but what auction doesn’t have foolish prices?
Samir Patel says
Brian Gilbert – I meant my comment in regards to these high priced .cm purchases. Yes if you are trying to brand-protect your own name then it would be worth purchasing one for a normal reg fee. But to think that you are actually going to get significant amount of misdirected traffic to offset the $xx,xxx purchase fee is rediculous. Once these people actually get to your site you still need them to do sometime besides click the back button. Also I don’t know about what others think but I think very soon these names are going to get tested at trademark level and many of them will lose. The fact that you are only one letter off in the whole name? Common.
snicksnack says
As long as the names are generic, the registrant should have no problems against traemark holders, considering the dispute policy of Netcom.
Samir Patel says
What’s next? .nt
snicksnack says
I guess the next big one will be .co
btw there is no .nt only .ne
snicksnack says
cyworld.cm $3603
mexico.cm $3000
market.cm $2105
freestuff.cm $2100
videogames.cm $2100
milf.cm $1900
jokes.cm $1400
Samir Patel says
I can see how .co could be successful because it is not all about the typo. .co actually means something. It is an abbreviation of company. I was being sarcastic about .nt
snicksnack says
The reason number one for .CO registration will be the traffic the domains get. CO being an abreviation for company is of course a plus

Hello,
There are some interesting comments here. I understand the different points of view. I have also read about the Kevin Ham / Yahoo / dotCM arrangement of the past. I have a couple of questions and would so much appreciate your thoughts:
1) Why do so many folks take the attitude that you can only make money of typo traffic (for example “David J Castello” and “Samir Patel”)??? Why can’t a person or company create a real business from a domain such as books.cm or furniture.cm? The domain can be advertised just like that — be sure to visit our site at books.cm…etc…etc…
2) The hype surrounding dotCM is validating the whole rush – agreed?
3) If Kevin Ham and The Castello’s have made so much money off domain names….why aren’t the dotCM domains selling for a whole bunch more?
4) Why haven’t millions of names been pre registered? I mean are people asleep or out of money? Why did sex.cm even get bid to $51k….where are the folks who have $500,000??? Seriously…I want to know….is this hype or real?
5) Think of last.fm —- we never heard of that domain….and now look at http://www.last.fm/ — they are huge….why….marketing!
I thank you all for your thoughts and comments. Please know that I am not trying to be sarcastic or mean spirited…..I just want to hear your opinion further and I thank you!
I wish you all the best!!!
Best Regards,
MO

I have NP answering your questions publicly.
Of course you could.
You could do this with any extension
.net
.cc
.biz
In Theory
But in relatity people will naturally, in their thinking, default to the .com.
When you advertise something you need to build brand recogiztion and something memorable. Most people when they see an ad on TV and certainly in print or on the radio, don’t just hop on their computer to check it out so they have to remember the URL. People’s brain will naturally will default to the .com.
Moreover the general public, that is 98% of those not in the Tech world probably have never heard of anything other than a .com or .org or .gov and don’t understand the world of domains.
So you can advertise books.cm all you want but 95% of your traffic is going to go to books.com.
Books.cm is not catchy like say marry.me is so the chance someone will remember it is slight.
Now you can SEO the site and if you wind up placed well you will get traffic through the search engines. But again is people want to revisit you and do it through memory rather than bookmarking they probably would type in books.com
2) The hype surrounding dotCM is validating the whole rush – agreed?
Not sure of what your asking. NameJet.com put this out their as a new extension.
There has no one that has been touting this as the next best thing to sliced bread.
No one has any info to base traffic stats on but a good guess.
I think a fairer statement is that the auctions have made this extension a financial success for the registry and namejet.com. Once the Go Live registrations are opened I think you will see a lot more registrations than you would have before the auctions due to the amount being spent at them.
3) If Kevin Ham and The Castello’s have made so much money off domain names….why aren’t the dotCM domains selling for a whole bunch more?
To the best of my knowledge neither Kevin Ham nor the Castello’s are buying .cm.
I think if the extension did $2M in a week its not horrible. All of the .me contested extensions totaled just over $2M when they released it
But again no one really knows how much traffic these will generate there is no end user market for them, so if you want to sell one you are only going to do another domainer or possibly the owner of the .com version.
4) Why haven’t millions of names been pre registered? I mean are people asleep or out of money? Why did sex.cm even get bid to $51k….where are the folks who have $500,000??? Seriously…I want to know….is this hype or real?
First of all, hopefully people stayed away from trademarks so that shortened up the list (at least I haven’t seen any of these sell for big money as we did back in the .me rollout)
Second because we all know there is a small bleed over of .com traffic it would only make sense to go after .cm’s for which the .com had a ton of traffic. You would not make your registration fees back on a domain where the .com only did say 10K visitors a month. So most people went after only generic category killer domains with proven substantial traffic.
For example it would not be worth registering proteinbars.cm as the .com seems to have little to no traffic.
5) Think of last.fm —- we never heard of that domain….and now look at http://www.last.fm/ — they are huge….why….marketing!
Last.fm is a huge site, but its owned by one of the largest media companies in the world appears frequently on CBS Network TV and it was bought for $280 Million dollars to begin with.
Its a easy to remember domain, music oriented, perfect for the .FM extension
http://www.thedomains.com/2009/05/27/why-would-cnetcom-just-park-a-domain-like-radiocom/
Likewise you can have a great .tv domain used in conjunction with a show, program or blog about .TV.
However that does not make every dictionary word added to a .fm or .tv worth the registration fee.
Samir Patel says
I agree with MHB on 1.) I would hate to spend tons of money on advertising my .cm after the actual domain purchase to see it all wasted on free advertising for the .com version of my name. I think this would be the ultimate reverse typo. I wonder how much of these people trying to build actual businesses of these .cm will loose traffic out to the .com
Where as you would maybe expect someone who is used to going to a website like amazon.com mistypes and lands at amazon.cm
What about when a person sees a billboard quickly when they are driving or reads a magazine in a public place and tries to remember your .cm address. They will ultimately end up at the .com
MO says
Dear MHB & Samir Patel,
Thank you so so much for taking the time to write back. It really means a lot to me that you took the time to explain —- truly taking time on a weekend to help a person out like this is very nice of you. Your comments help me and many others hopefully too.
I guess on a personal note a person could register MyNameIsMO.cm and my email is MO@MyNameIsMO.cm —- and hope that people will get it correct……but wait they have to remember it and then we start with your explanations again……oh chasing a tail in circles!!!
The registration fee is high —- too bad for everyone….then again….arrgghh.
1)Have you heard what the rates may be after the two years? I can’t find any info on that…….
2) Have you heard what the registration fee will be once this whole auction biz is over with? Meaning the system is wide open for anyone to register names like ThereIsSomeRedPaintHere.cm —- just an example…..but wondering if dotCM is just using this time to get the big bucks and then the price will drop to $5 per name??? Please if anyone can help with this question then of course I send my thanks!!!
Take Care and God Bless,
MO

Regarding fees, I’ve been told that the normal registration fee once the GoLive starts will be as low as $99 a year.
Renewal fees 2 years from now are hard to predict, but I would guess $99 a year or lower
snicksnack says
Go live will start from below $100 and I assume the price will drop beginning of 2010. I doubt it will reach $10.
