Hollywood.us For $5,700, A Bargain or Not?

July 28, 2009 by Michael Berkens

There were a few interesting domain auctions closing today.

One very interesting one was Hollywood.us.

I don’t own very many .us domains, but this sure looked like a good one, especially in light of the success of Hollywood.com and Hollywood.tv.

After much debate between myself and myself, I passed, but still think it was a very good buy at $5,722,  where it sold on SnapNames.com today.

Another interesting domain was candycompany.com which sold for $6,800 on NameJet.com.

With Rick’s sale of Candy.com for $3M its seems like candycompany.com wasn’t a bad buy for $6,800.

Some other notable domain name sales:

Homeview.com $4,500

TravelJamaica.com $3,166

Share.me $2,700

Headbangers.com $2,600

Blackbag.com $2,600

Grouptalk.com $1,900

Biopoint.com $1,645

I picked up freecareertests.com for $390

I think it was a good bargain,

I had visons it was going to top 10K so seems a bargain to me.

Buyer definetly got a good deal, and no doubt we’ll see this sell for more very soon.

    Absolutley, worth it.

Hollywood.us I think you should of purchased Michael. I think there is plenty of room left for development and buyers to fill the Hollywood name. Celebs, Real Estate, Lawyers, Clubs, Restaurants, Theaters etc.

Even though it’s a .us, I think US City domains make a lot of sense with .us .

I liked CandyCompany.com as well. I wrote a little about it the other day http://www.dotweekly.com/2009/07/24/domain-name-news-tips-and-tricks/ . It was an iReit owned domain.

Congrats on the cover story at DnJournal.com btw!

    Jamie

    Thanks for the Congrats.

You think people are paying more just because its an ireit domain?

  5. Jamie Zoch says

    July 28, 2009 at 4:58 pm

    No problem!

No, I don’t think it sold for more because it was an iReit domain, I just had noticed it was listed by them. I think the majority of bidders wouldn’t have a clue it was even an iReit domain….

Now if it was listed on SnapNames as a member listed domain (In Auction), it would not of sold for what it did on NameJet!

I keep telling SnapNames, but they aren’t listening……. Snap needs to mix No Reserve member listed domains in with the expired, which will produce better results!

Since with each “in auction” domain listed by a member, the bid price raises the whole time it’s listed with each bid. With expired auctions, everybody’s in at the same price until the auction starts. In the end, more bidders join then if the price keeps going up. People get caught up in the bidding frenzy at the end and with less bidders, your chances as a seller are lower for the frenzy.

I think Hollywood.us was a bargain, it sounds great, it looks great and it makes perfect sense….traffic can be built with development.

    Mike, I wouldn’t lose sleep over Hollywood.us for $5722. It’s definitely not a RestaurantSupply.com for $20K. :-p

    I like freecareertests.com for $390 though – a very nice keyword domain.

As for me, I lost out on ZipLines.com for $3,433.00 today and PdaSoftware.com for $4500 yesterday on Snapnames. Both very good deals.

I had an emergency patient today around the dropcatch time so was only able to get AirfareBangkok.com for $7.

Jamie, it’s ‘would have’ not ‘would of’
    :p
damn me! you must be thinking 😉
not bad a price for .us but its worrying how much
disparity there is between .us and .com
    prices!!
few users outside the USA know about
the .us extension but hey, the .us must
surely be much bigger inside the USA isn’t it?
and your ‘online population’ is massive!!

here, people around me know only the
.com, .net, .org, .biz and .mu (our ccTLD)
they don’t seem to realise that there is more than
that … we’ve got a loooong way to go still
    best,
    Ritz

I love homeview.com for $4500, but know I am influenced by always seeing http://homeviewsiouxfalls.com/ here at home as the main Real Estate publication. Homeview.com could be taken national. I like the local to national play.

traveljamaica.com seems like an easy monetization. add a bit of content and put up the beaches/sandals affiliate program at 4% if nothing else – program is on CJ if interested.

    @Ritz,

I would have wrote that, but figured you were a reader hear as well. 😉

    Hey Tony,

sorry, I’m the one who beat you out for Ziplines.com.. you beat me up good on it, though..

I’ll be building it out within the next few months..

Mike..your too modest…you should make a post about DNJ.

Great read…nice to learn more about the person we read each day.

An absolute bargain. In a few years you could add atleast a 2 infront of the 5.

Sweet name, you couldn’t do that in Canada where all 35,600+- pure geos (city.ca, town.ca etc) are registry reserved for local government.

  17. Mike says

I think Hollywood.us was an absolute steal at that price, I recently sold PalmBeach.us on the reseller market for $4k, and that doesn’t even begin to compare to Hollywood.us. I wish I had seen that auction.

Very nice geo for that price. I know that Hollywood.TV is very big. They regularly capture & produce celebrity video that is picked up by major networks and news channels.

.US is not just another extension. It’s on a track to become truly huge.

I absolutely love cityname.us and believe most of them are so undervalued it borders on being hilarious (especially smaller cities that aren’t in the “top tier” that can be had for next to nothing, occasionally, you still find them for reg).

IMO the price paid for Hollywood.us is reflective of a broader market condition that is lacking in ‘dry powder’ due to the economy.

    Mike,

    Great Blog!

    I like freecareertests.com, nice purchase.

I think the .US space is going to explode. I think hollywood.us was a steal for that price. How many cities within the United States could someone in China, India or Russia name.

I would think less than 5 and hollywood.us would be one of them. I wish i noticed this auction while it was running.
