The world’s regional Internet registries (RIRs) have annoucend they support the European Union’s demand, proposed by European Commissioner Viviane Reding last month, for ending of the collaboration agreement between ICANN and the US Department of Commerce.
The RIRs, responsible for IP address allocation within geographic regions, have put out a joint statement saying that it was time for the US government to pull out of control of the Internet: The agreement between ICANN and the US Department of Commerce is set to expire on 30 September.
The group stressed that all the RIRs, including the north American registry, ARIN, were in full agreement on this issue.
“It’s purely a political issue,” he said. “We have an excellent opinion of ICANN based on the way that it runs things, but it’s the political dimension can cause problems,” he said.
However, the head of the RIR, Pawlik “Even with the change of administration, I can’t see them loosening that control”
Congress held hearings a couple of weeks ago on renewing, ICANN agreement with the US Commerce Department, & it sure didn’t sound like those congressman were willing to let ICANN go out on their own.

I wonder if RIRs and ADIN (and others) would feel this way after Icann became independent and Icann started to squeeze these organizations.
You have to admit, DoC very rarely interfers with Icann’s operations.
But, Icann doesn’t like that someone else might question their decisions.
I still say – it is all about money.
Icann is like a 13 yr teenager. They no longer want any parental control. They know best about how to run their life.

Not to be rude, because the EU is a great nation of democracy, but I think Viviane Reding of the EU should first wait for the EU member states to work on some of other internal issues they have yet to agree on rather then pushing for ICANN independence.
I would like to see ICANN become independent but right now with the current indepence has create a ton of cybersquatters. Also, a ton of overpaid employees at ICANN.
I like the EU and Viviane Reding has a good idea in heart, but the reality is we need more US oversigt now, not later.
