Both domains, CashIsKing.com and HomeBoy.com, ended at auction today at Snapnames.com.
Both domains sold in the $x,xxx range, but one sold for considerably more.
I bought one of them and let the other one go.
So I thought I would just poll you guys and see what you think was the better domain to buy, or neither one?
Later on I will post the sale prices for each.
Post your thoughts below.
Thanks.
BTW the .me auctions at NameJet are rocking today and we will be posting the results as soon as they are done, and we have a new high sale for a .me on Namejet.com, details to follow.
Ed says
I’m guessing you bought homeboy.com

The game isn’t to guess which one I bought, its to see which one you like better.
Which one would you have bought, which do you think sold for more and/or is worth more?
Reece Berg says
I like CashIsKing.com more myself — I might be biased though because I love to say that 🙂
I guess Homeboy must be an American thing? I had never heard of it myself and had to look up what it meant.
David J Castello says
Not crazy about either, but if I had to choose I’d pick HomeBoy.com because it might be getting some direct nav (but not for four figures).
Scott says
I would prefer CashIsKing.com myself, I can see more development opportunities for it.
Gazzip says
I was in watching the CashIsKing one…very nice brandable name for a great price IMO
Both nice names but I’d prefer CashIsKing ….If I had the cash to buy it that is 🙂
Elliot says
Homeboy Industries in a company that helps former gang members out in LA. CashIsKing.com is a popular saying so it could be brandable. Homeboy.com is probably a better name in the $6-8k range and CashIsKing.com could be $1-2k.
Pat says
HomeBoy gets 5,400 exact local searches and 27,100 exact global searches according to Google AdWords tool.
Cash is King only gets 2,900 exact global and “not enought data” exact local.
I pick HomeBoy. Cash is King could be a great brandable name, though.
Tony says
OK, I’ll play.
Homeboy.com would be a better type-in name and probably would make more money parking.
CashIsKing.com might appeal to more endusers but Homeboy.com is very brandable as well. I can see Jay-Z or P-Diddy opening a line of clothing or naming a production company HomeBoy Productions or HomeBoy Wear and putting it on HomeBoy.com.
I’d rather have HomeBoy.com by a mile.
It went for a lot higher than I expected so my guess is that is the one you won.
Tony says
LOL, you probably got CashIsKing.com…
steven says
I like CashIsKing.com if price is the same.
I would not pay 6,XXX for either
What are the uses for Homeboy.com? Cashisking.com?
How do you monetize them?
Jason says
I’m going with HomeBoy.com. It’s a more general brandable, shorter, and … cooler.
Johnny says
I really don’t like either….but CashIsKing.com if I had to chose.
Cartoonz says
HomeBoy.
No contest.
Faye says
I like CashisKing, very appropriate statement right about now.
Jody says
Prefer CashIsKing. Seems like you could do more with that name. HomeBoy is a pretty played out term. Probably in the graveyard with homie & homeslice. Could see the word being used in a different way in the future though.
gerry says
Homeboy is already branded (slang).
Be a great video game site, reviews etc.
Chris says
Neither has much traffic value, but they do have brand value.
They both sound like they could be a line of hip hop clothes, song or general hip hop brand.
CashisKing sounds more modern. Even though homeboy is a bit dated of a term, I will give homeboy.com the edge as the better name since it is shorter.
lunst says
Homeboy is much better.
dcmike77 says
Homeboy is one word
CashisKing is a phrase.
Homeboy has my vote.
theoretical says
Homeboy by far. It means your closest of friends – people you grew up with. Perfect for “urban” social networking.
Frankie Aladi says
For the right individual, Homeboy.com is by far a better buy. It is easy to remember and all you need is to hear it once on the radio. You could brand it into anything you want. @CashIsKing on the other hand looks like an email I will delete. It sticks of MLM
steven says
cashisking.com is better in my opinion. perhaps a payday loan-type biz. big money there.
homeboy is too vague. plus, the .net is for homeboy records. may be some issues with that down the road.
Kevin M. says
HomeBoy.com
I ditto Elliots comments completely. Also HomeBoy Records was/is a pretty big rapper label. (And they’d have the cash, and ego, to buy it!)
D says
Also agree with Elliot
Jamie Zoch says
I like CashIsKing.com myself. It screams Money!
Homeboy.com seems Gangsta….
Yaron says
I like homeboy.com
I guess CashIsKing has more development options, but for the right end user Homeboy is a great name.
Bob Olea says
They’re both OK in their own way – but I would pick Homeboy.com of the two. It would get traffic from home boy as well as homeboy searches. Would probably have much better traffic of the two. Social site? Max low x,xxx for speculation, mid x,xxx with a plan or flip in mind.
CashIsKIng.com might do OK as a payday loan type of site, or as a pawnshop directory. but would need a lot of work to get the traffic. More of a brandable name. Unless I had a real solid plan for it, I wouldn’t pay more than high xxx for it for that reason.
Jason says
@Jamie I agree… HomeBoyz.com would be better… =D
MHB says
Thanks to everyone for playing along.
As it should not surprise anyone, Elliot was bang on with his predictions on price.
The domains sold as follows at SnapNames.com today:
HomeBoy.com $6,650
CashIsKing.com $2,306
I bought cashisking.com.
Its one of Mr. Schwartz favorite sayings, so maybe he’ll buy it from me with a piece of that Candy.com money.
Reece Berg says
Great buy.
I figured Homeboy was probably more expensive being one word (?).. Must be a language thing. CashIsKing.com has a lot of very obvious possible uses — I was thinking along the lines of an earlier poster that it’d be great for a payday loan website, although a piece of Candy.com money would be good too 🙂
nam.es says
I would say there is no winner between these two. I would buy any of them. No commercial value, whatsoever. HomeBoy.com is probably $1,500-2,000 name.
Stephen Douglas says
Hi Mike,
I’m not a fan for either of the domains. Homeboy is old, but established, and could be a lame but successful clothing brand or accessories for wannabee whiteboy gangstas.
CashisKing.com doesn’t pan out for a workable site for me. I might be missing something, but you’re announcing with this domain “Cash is King!” yep, nobody would disagree with that. Now how do you convert that phrase into relational revenue generation? Is it a “garage sale listing” site that promotes selling your junk gives you cash?
Is it a “get rich quick” online scheme, like buying/selling domains (who in their right mind would do THAT!)
Or is it a domain name was bought hoping that Rick the King would say, “i have so much dang money now from my successful big ticket sales, I’d like this domain for my very own brand, and I’ll pay $5k for it right now!”
😉
I say use it as a brand, and sell domain investment ebooks like Domain Graduate. Where else but in domaining can someone with just a few years experience, a talented brain and dedication build an empire of domain values and consultation expertise that generates revenue that rivals top corporate execs? If you are confused, look up “Elliot Silver”. There are many more names that can be added to prove the success of domain investing, and making “CashisKing.com” a money making “how to” website.
Gazzip says
Nice one, very powerful sounding brand name for sure – Loads of potential uses like ebooks, loans, credit advice etc but I think a price comparison website something like Confused.com could also be a great use for it…most people are looking to save money in one way or other.
….now I know who ****** is at snapnames 🙂
Congrats 🙂

Mike & all:
Both have a great potential, both are solid. A couple of years ago we bought a name off of eBay, trade value for domain professionals possibly in the 3K range or less. We paid 10K for it. A year later we sold it for 250K. How was it done, and why did it work?
1. We’re always spreading our bets. We have MANY such investments all over, and from time to time, one works out well.
2. The issue wasn’t the price we paid but the 250K potential we saw when we purchased. We saw the potential, just as much as I see with the two above. It is there for the right client, the right time.
3. To get those prices you have to walk away from many lower offers. It isn’t about the value of the property as much as it is about the value of the property to a READY, WILLING, & ABLE buyer. If the stars are aligned for you, if your strategy is to make a homerun rather than singles, and if you can walk away from lower offers for the sake of the homerun, once you have solid domain, as the two above, it makes no difference if their trade value is 2K or 6K. It is THE SAME for that READY WILLING AND ABLE buyer, as that buyer isn’t buying “what it is”, but “what it could be”.

Late to the party but I will drop my 2 cents anyway. The hip-hop market is not only big in the states but is still growing in popularity in Europe and Japan, homeboy.com has a large targeted built in consumer base. It should be easy to monetize. It will take a little more effort to define a consumer wth cashisking.com, but it is a very nice domain nonetheless.
