The Live Moniker TRAFFIC auction just concluded with a total of $2.1 Million dollars in sales.
The domain Ad.com, lead the pack selling for $1.4 Million, after having a reserve range of just $250K-$500K.
It appears the domain was purchased by Directi.
The next highest priced domain sale was bottledwater.com, for $45K, Athletic.com came in at $40K, and then Vixen.com at $32K.
In all 90 domains sold, or just under 50%, a great sell through rate, in a bad economy.
As I have said all along there is a difference in auction houses and we congratulate Monte and his team at Moniker for a very good sale in a bad economy.
Any domain that did not sell in the live auction, will go to the extended auction which concludes next week, along with over 5,000 other domains.

I really thought AD.com would sell for alot more than $1.4m

I think in comparison the sale of advertise.com represents a better buy, its nice to have 2 letter domains but I think if they were looking to rebrand they could have done this for a bit less, with a more marketable brand… would be interesting to see who else was bidding for this as it got to 1.4 million for a reason.

Is it just me or was BottledWater.com @ $45K seem crazy high? I think I can say I have never once searched for the term on the net and not sure why I would. Hmmm I’m not understanding that one at that price…

Nice post – some great deals – SteakKnives.com at 18k is a steal
When everyone is sleeping tonight remember some schmuck just paid 18k for a round of infomercials on Steak Knives to run tonight – he will pay it again tomorrow … and the next … and the next day.
Domains like this you can build a powerhouse around where the industry is doing a ton of marketing for you – and you can drop ship everything. LuxuryBedding.com sound familiar?
You don’t need a whole of infrastructure – just content and a partner.
One day people will laugh at this point in time.

Not loving this comment
“SteakKnives.com at 18k is a steal”
That was our domain.
Should have made a higher offer in the few years we owned it.
I thought it would go into the $35K range

Michael,
If I had interest in steakknives I would have believe me but Mom never allowed to even lift a hammer growing up so I’ve been conditioned to stay away from sharp objects.
Just fascinating that category and product names are going for these prices – almost like we are back 5 years ago – great buying opportunties.

We bought some domains, including campingsupplies.com which I bought for less than I sold steakknives.com for.
To me campingsupplies.com is a lot like sportinggoods.com, which sold a couple of years ago for something like $450K, a category killer, to sell everything camping, while steakknives is a great product its still just one product.
Alan says
Mike,
I am very different than most domainers when it comes to valuing names since I entered the online world as a developer only to fall into semi-full time domaining years later.
CampingSupplies.com is a great name and worth six figures for sure – but part of our valuation for buying product names – ones where we want to keep or develop – have nothing to do with age, ppc revenue, traffic and industry standard factors.
Its more semi-end user thinking – development in my world is cheap, very cheap – so usually the biggest cost is the domain. So for domains like this I’m thinking how many steaknives could someone sell a year … then if it comes to a reasonable amount of time to get that money back its done. I think this was a steal because in terms of online ordering 18k is not a lot of steak knives over a minor period of time and selling steakknifes online required no factory or R&D department – bulk buy or just drop ship.
I would compare this name to bobbleheads.com in terms of (a) popularity (b) ease of product fulfillment (c) product awareness and (d) ease of knowledge for someone interested in entering the business.
Why didn’t I buy it – There are about 5,000 names I want to own – I wish I could buy them all.
I’m probably alone but I never count who is on my team – just my thoughts.

steakknives.com – too many “K”‘s for my taste

Maybe, Navigation Catalyst will sell you Steaknives.com for something lower than $ 18K. Since, it is less 1K figure around $ 15K.

Moniker had more quality domains but the better deals were at Rick Latona’s. For example, BreakfastBars.com would’ve gotten $10-15k on Moniker instead of $1300 (great buy for Rick S). Same thing with Gauze.com instead of $3750.
The take home message is buy at Rick’s, sell at Moniker.

There are plenty of deals to be had every day on the level of 5 yrs ago. They’re just more of them now and in more places.

Hi Mikey-B,
See my report on your fantastic purchases at TSV, especially regarding campingequipment.com.

I don’t think I’m a dummy. Obnoxious maybe, but no dummy. Congrats on some great purchases!
