According to a press release today, Solar Energy Initiatives, Inc. (OTCBB:SNRY), in announcing its financial results for the quarter ending october 31, 2008, states:
“”””In the first quarter of 2008, capital expenditures were approximately $1.6 million, the majority of which was related to the acquisition of business assets, primarily the solarenergy.com domain name.”””
I have no heard or read about the sale of this domain, but it certainly reads as if this domain was purchased in the area of $1.5M- $1.6M. Being that this is a public company, seems like a real sale in that price range.
It certainly is a domain worth seven figures and seems like a good buy at that price.
I would estimate the true market value of this domain to be north of $3M and probably around $5M.
It also go to remind us, that there are a lot of “unreported” domain sales, that take place.
We all eagerly await Ron Jackson’s DnJournal.com weekly sales reports, to see how the domain sales market is doing. However, we should all be reminded that these figures only reflect reported sales and there is a whole other world of unreported sales, some of them major ones, like this.
Daniel Sanchez says
I’m surprised it was not sold for more than that, your true market value estimations I believe are correct.
Yeah most of my purchases/sales are done privately. Hence a PR is very helpful in bringing traffic to the domain and links for development.

100% on the ball there Mike – Not everyone reports there sales.
Being a broker in this industry – I have completed several $$,$$$ deals where the old and previous owners have asked that the figures arent disclosed.
Being a person of trust and to keep my reputation I must honor there wishes but how many others of us out there have sold a name and never submitted it to Ron or other domain sales systems.
We see lots of low end name sales on NP & DNF but we dont here of many $$$,$$$ which Im sure complete on a weekly basis to endusers and smaller companies where there information isnt public.
Still its a great name and SolarEnergy.com is easily worth – 3mil

Robbie

good stuff…I would imagine the higher the price paid the more likely privacy is asked for. The new owners dont want everyone seeing they had millions to spend and the sellers dont want to be bombarded with “buy my domain” offers.

Excellent!!!
No wonder many offers are coming in for:

How sad. 1.6M and SolarEnergy.com does not resolve but http://www.SolarEnergy.com does. You’d think they could pay someone enough money to figure that one out.

solarenergy.com – nice domain name – great potential

Just goes to show how high end users are (understandably) willing to pay for the right domains.
Prior to selling for 1.5+/- mill, I’d bet that not one experienced domainer would have valued this one any more than about 500k; with many saying not more than 100k.
Yet; now that we all know how high it went for, suddenly most of us believe it was a good value; if not a true bargain; at this price.
Demonstrates yet again the amazingly high degree of subjectivity present in the valuation of our domain assets.
Steve M says
ps Namecake; why wait for the call that may never come?
Instead, gather together all the reasons they should also own your version and call them up yourself and see what kind of deal you can make.
Be bold; you have nothing to lose by trying.

If indeed there was a sale, it looks like they didn’t have to go and shop around this domain too much… It changed hands between one Jacksonville Florida energy company to another Jacksonville Florida energy company.
Hmmm… what are the odds, eh?

Prior to the sale I would have, $2million min

It amazes me how a company would spend $1Mil + on a domain name and they put that garbage of a website online. It wouldn’t cost more than $50K to hire a professional web company that will build a decent website and complement a million dollar domain. If I didn’t know this domain sale information and found this domain/site I would seriously offer not more then $30K

I have the largest premium solar domain portfolio in the world. It’s been my baby for four years, nurturing it, cuddling it, laffing at some low five figure offers on some, like “SolarTechnician.com”, “SolarConference.com” SolarConvention.com”, and one that’s sure to surprise you all, SolarClothing.com.
350 keyword descriptive solar domains, just waiting for the right moment to… well, cash in my chips. And when I do, you’re all invited to my party!
This was a good bit of news on SolarEnergy.com, I had heard some rumors a while back, but couldn’t trace it down. Thanks for the update, MB

Funny. Its always neat to hear about the single gold medal winning domain sale, then hear about the innumberable other names in the race that believe they too have some 24kt dust on them. Its just saw dust kicked up from the track….

This is for Stephen,
How come your domains are at Parked rather than at whypark where you are the VP of the company?
Do you have sample sites we can view?
thanks

What a great sale…
Solar is one area I have zero domains for…
Of the 1000s and 1000s of names I have
I didn’t see any “solar” …. hmmmm….
Stephen you have some NICE ones as well…
I need to stay focused though… limit my
categories… I find it much much easier to
do “end user” contacts in a keyword
specific area….
I rarely ever report my sales… Two reasons…
1. Most I am contracturally bound to privacy…
2. It’s not a good idea for me to report one here and there — on the off chance I accidentally
mention something I should not have…
Keeping my mouth shut has now become habit… unless there’s a buyer that specifically wants
the sale reported — but that’s rare the buyer
request that…

“Stephen – How come your domains are at Parked rather than at Whypark where you are the VP of the company?”
ANSWER: I own nearly 4000 domains. I also administrate approximately 100,000 domains through my Successclick clients and my job at WhyPark. Further complicating my life, I have my own domains in the “build mode” that are actually finished or near finished, and can be making me money but I don’t have the time to focus on completing them. So, quick to the meat – I don’t have much time for managing my own domains.
For example: One of my sites will be the largest source of photos and content in the world for a specific subject. The site is done, but needs 5000+ original photos I own to be watermarked, processed and uploaded. This site alone would be a full time job for me as it stands… arggggh!
WhyPark is specifically magical for domains that don’t receive any “typein” traffic at other parking services and need SE traffic based on relevant content. The solar domains I mentioned (SolarConference.com, etc) all get decent traffic and purchase requests at Parked and TZ. I’m not fretting over those. But I DO own thousands of generic descriptive domains, many of them longtails, that would benefit from WhyPark’s services. I am moving them over every chance I get.
Bottom line, I am too busy helping my customers and clients with their domains and have no time to focus on my own domains. Eventually, I’m looking forward to having at least 2000 of my domains at WhyPark by summer of 2009.
I recommend anyone who has the time to analyze their domain portfolio and define the domains that don’t get typein traffic, but have great generic descriptive names, invest $.99 per domain and get content on them, and introduce them to indexing by the search engines. Leaving your domains to rot at a traditional non-content parking service where they make less than renewal fees yearly is just bad investment strategy and a loss of potential domain value. Domainers WILL bring their non-typein domains to Whypark, it’s just a question of when.
If anyone wants to meet me and talk about their domain portfolio strategies, I’ll be at Domainfest 2009 in January. I will buy you a drink if you introduce yourself to me and tell me your domaining story! Happy Holidays!
GoodKarma says
Stephen…thanks for the good plug on whypark. Do you have any sample sites to show for?
I have to turn clients down because I rather manage my own domains/sites.
When all my sites/domains are making MORE money, then I will take in clients on selected basis.
My opinion is, why waste my time on making the client’s rich than making myself rich…isn’t that allocation of resources?
If you do not monetize your domains to the fullest, then you are wasting.

You know you will never find time to finish what you want to do and on your dying bed, you will mummer
I should have, I could have…I would have…
in the end, nothing gets done.
It is your domains, develop them !!
