This post is for the non-domainers who read the blog.
A recent report by Nominet, which is the national registry for .uk domain names, showed that 14 per cent of companies don’t renew their domain name until the day after renewal is due.
I read stories every week of companies who complain about losing their domain because they didn’t get the renewal notice, their contact info wasn’t correct, etc. etc.
So for those folks here are some simply rules that all us domainers know.
You don’t have to renew your domain for one year, or register it for one year.
You can register or renew your domain for up to 10 years at most registries and not only will you get the piece of mind that you don’t have to worry about the renewing the domain for 10 years, but you’ll save money since the registration fees are going to increase October 1 of this year and again next year or the year after.
Keep your contact info current.
If you moved you would send a change of address to the post office, wouldn’t you?
You wouldn’t just let your mail keep going to your old address and get returned to the senders.
If you changed your e-mail address you would send an e-mail with your new address to all your contacts.
Treat your domain like any other valuable asset you have.
Keep track of it.
Keep it updated.
Pay the fees well in advance.
Otherwise your going to lose it and someone is waiting to grab it.

Some domainers who want to sell their domains at any given time might not be moved to do 3 or more years registration, especially if they have hundreds of names for sale. But they have to be vigilant though.
