More and more its looking like any decent .me name is going to be in the four figures and any really good .me domain is going to wind up in the five figures.
Does this roll out change anyones mind about the hundreds of new extensions coming and there effect on .com pricing??

Andrew says
Doesn’t really change my mind. There’s only so much money to go around…if 100 other extensions were launched at the same time as .me, would people spend as much money?
What web site are these auctions on?
I also wonder if a lot of people buying are SEO people…
Nick says
I think .me will be stronger than TLDs such as .biz and .info. Once there are one or two really well-known sites ending in .me you will see it grow rapidly, at least for verbs, like survey.me.
Also, IMO if you don’t grab a city.me or a country.me you’ll regret it. Toronto.me going for US$1000? I can’t see that losing value.
Andrew says
the fact that .me domains are being billed as a great domain extension for ‘personal’ use makes me think the commercial potential is limited. yes, I know .org was for non-profit et al, but I just don’t see a lot of value here.
Perhaps time will prove me wrong…or right 🙂
RKB says
I agree with Andrew above. In addition, looking at the auction prices above it appears there won’t be many .me domains touching even 5-figures. If a new extension marketed so heavily can’t hit some decent prices then it doesn’t bode well for .me
I guess we just need to wait few more days for the fog to get clear.
Perhaps I may have to eat my words 🙂
Andrew says
Personally, if I were bidding I’d be really pissed about the extensions. Seems they’re trying to milk it while they can. To imagine the firestorm if this were at Sedo
Nick says
I do agree that the commercial potential will never touch .com, but I think really it’s only domainers who even know there’s such a thing as .me yet. Once somebody gets a .me site into the public eye, all owners will benefit.
Andrew says
Nick, but what commercial company will actually use one of these? I guess I could see an ad campaign for ‘insure.me’, but the odds are low.
I’m actually surprised by a lot of people in the internet marketing and seo community who are buying these domains. GoDaddy has a lot of non-domainer customers who were pitched on this domain.
Nick says
I hear you, but it depends on how warm and fuzzy they want to be.
Instead of sending people mycokerewards.com, Coke could market Coke.me. Someone big will do it at some point and that will raise the profile of the TLD. All those guys are going to have to buy the .me anyway just to protect their brands, so why not?
Why not have people make their own cards at Hallmark.me?
tekmo says
I got a steal on a few auctions I was in, and capped myself for a certain few @ 500 (like studentloans.me which i lost). In any case, its interesting how high some of these are going, but the extension thing is kinda lame. I don’t get why hug.me is up at 13k though.
Damir says
rob.me – nice domain name.
.COM – is king
.NET – second best
.biz / .org – 3rd best
.info – great information domain name
GregB says
I registered the “enomsucks.me” (at godaddy) and felt myself lucky to get it since enom.com had already taken the .com, net, org, info, biz, tv TLDs for itself.
I figure it is a good match for my other just registered domain “enomsucks.us”.
I found out that they had “stolen” my domain today and when I went looking for a kindred community to vent I only found enom parking pages and I figure what with their service and the rudeness of their support staff that they must be making a fortune off of direct navigation related PPCs.
I think my domains are much catchier sounding and I’ve put up sites. I think there is good possibility to develop a real sticky community site on one of them and perhaps a directory related to registrars on the other.
Anyway, to at least be mostly on topic and with a passing reference to a “3d” suffix comment(s) in another thread I figure that there are lots of good “****suck.me” domains still available and I would have registered “tucowssucks.me” except for I don’t like the ss’s together, even though it is hissingly snakelikingly appropriate.
MHB says
RKB
Guys don’t forget that these auction are not even for the reserved names, that is the names the registry held back for the purpose of auctioning.
Considering this is just the auction for the valuable domains I am very impressed by the numbers.
MHB says
Guys
Lets also not forget that no one knows the effect of Apple’s purchase of me.com and how much of a verb “me” becomes in internet usage
Rob Sequin says
I don’t see any tie from me.com to *.me.
What percentage of bidders in the .me auction are buying for price appreciation?
My guess is that it is in the high 90s %.
Speculators buying in order to sell to other speculators.
MHB, I know you are routing for this extension but I don’t see many people jumping up and down about it.
When I see just ONE company launch and promote .me I will give it a second thought.
MHB says
Rob
I just want to be clear here.
As I write this blog everyday, I give my opinion with no end goals and completely unbiasedly.
This is why I don’t accept ads.
As I sit here today, I still do not own a .me domain.
Not one.
I’m in some auctions but the way the prices are going, I still may not have any in a week or two.
But I call stuff like I see it. Even when I have no personal interest or any benefit to me.
So I am not “routing” (think you meant rooting) for this extension, I just happen to think in my personal opinion its going to be a good extension and there are many good .me names worth having
Now do I think hug.me is worth 15k?
Maybe, but I’m not going to pay $15K for it.
and remember these aren’t even the premium names the registry held back. Let’s wait and see what some of those go for in TRAFFIC NY.
Rob Sequin says
Sorry. I did not mean to imply that you have an agenda to promote .me if that’s how you read my comment. That was not my intent.
You sound like a fan of .me and that you would like to own some good .me domains and see them become more valuable. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Sorry, didn’t mean to be negative. Keep up the good work.
MHB says
Rob
No problem, just want everyone to know where i’m coming from. Like I hear people tell me “you hate .mobi because you missed on them”
I just don’t operate that way.
I give my honest opinion, sometimes I call it right, other times not so much.
But I “get” the .me thing. I don’t “get” the mobi thing
Just as an example
MHB says
and if I was really that smart, I would have bought Property.com instead of Rick doing it.
tekmo says
hindsight is 20/20. .me is high risk but can be high reward too.
steven says
These prices are insane for .ME…..I can not wait to see who is bidding on these and here more of the reasoning for such strong investments.
These auctions make .mobi look promising
These .me names are just asvaluable or worthless as any other “garbage” extension like .GS or .BZ
Truly amazing to see these names selling for this kind of money,IMO
MHB says
Steve
The prices are getting very lofty.
However I still say since .me is a word and ,gs and .bz aren’t you cant compare them.
There are some natural killer combo’s and people are shelling out.
marry.me; your seriously telling me that is just as good or bad as marry.gs?
Nick says
I couldn’t agree more.
Let’s also not forget that the “gimmick” of .me works in Spanish as well as English. If anything, .me may be bigger in Latin America than in the Anglosphere.
Look how many people liked the cuteness of an URL like del.icio.us. Anything decent in the .me TLD has that beat by a mile!
Dontflame.me
Rob Sequin says
Okay. I’m in.
I just hand regged a city/international tourist destination.
Let’s just say that if Associated Cities allowed .me domains in, I’d get it 🙂
So, I have $40 in the game now.
Nick says
Glad you got in. Morpheus was the original domainer. He said,”Time is always against us.”
steven says
Mike,
There is a differance no doubt between marry.me and marry.BZ.
However, How much is that worth?
Are you going to develop a dating site? Is someone likely going to spend money on a name to ask there wife to marry them with the name? I mean, how do you monetize the name and at what cost?
The name is “cool” but at the end of the day is about money and I want to know how an investor recoups that money on any of these .ME names over a .US, .Mobi, or even a reg fee .BZ
When you answer that…I go back to what is the “real” differance between marry.me and marry.BZ
MHB says
Steven
I believe marry.me is a brandable site, especially in a world with hundreds of extensions.
What could you do with it, easy, make it a site for all things wedding, rings, invitations, planning, dresses, transportation, honeymoons the whole works.
A natural.
Name will sell for 25K++ easy.
MHB says
Steven
Actually if your going to be in NY I’ll bet you a drink its sell for at least $25K
and I drink Blue so it’s going to set you back $60.
steven says
I don’t doubt the name sells in that 20K-30K range but that doesn’t make it a smart buy. IMO, It means that the buyer can “afford” to speculate and doesn’t mind loosing substancial money. In the world I live there are opportunities daily to make lots of “safe” of safe money with an equal or higher ROI.
Why would anyone want to invest 25K into a name like marry.me as you say to make it a site for all things wedding, rings, invitations, planning, dresses, transportation, honeymoons the whole works.
They can do that with any other name out there and will be in the same “basic” position.
How many sites currently do that with weddings? How many people are holding their generic .com and other extensions names waiting for someone to come buy them so that person can develop that exact site. How many people or companies are out their with 6,7, and 8 figure budgets waiting to go start that business you describe? IMO, not enough to warrant the prices and speculation that exists. That is the exact reason too many people who think they hold gold hold “fools gold”
Again, If the buyers goal is to look at their portfolio and say, wow, I have a great vanity name, then they should I buy it.
I like to think anyone shelling out that kind of money cares about things like ROI.
I mean, if that is the case, VEG.as and names like this should be worth a fortune….right?
On a different note….I was coming back from Peurto Rico the other day and saw a 1.75 L bottle of the blue at the Duty Free. I tried to purchase it and was for international flights only.
tekmo says
“I mean, if that is the case, VEG.as and names like this should be worth a fortune….right?” False. You’re just breaking up the word. It’s far easier to brand something like keyword+me then something like keywo.rd
MHB says
Steve
I guess we can at least agree on the blue picked up some on the way out of the country for $153.
But you know how they do in the big apple, they sock you hard.
MHB says
Tekmo
VEG.as what does that mean??
If you don’t understand the value of marry.me or buy.me against veg.as or trre.gr i don’t know what to tell you, I throw my hands up on that one
steven says
The 1.75L was $299
I never saw blue in that big of a bottle before.

MHB I think you should reread my comment because im pretty sure we’re agreeing
jody says
Wouldn’t this same thinking apply to the Italian extension?
Seems like endless possibilities that will never really catch on.
love.it,hate.it,want.it etc..
Those type names don’t seem thriving in the aftermarket, although I’m not doubting someone would pay top dollar for them.
jody says
Or with the us extension
teach.us, insure.us
Me says
LONG LIVE THE .COM !!!
Tony Lam, DMD says
Good points by Jody with the .it and .us examples.
After the hype dies down and with the upcoming wave of new extensions, it will be real hard for .me investors to ever make back their investments. I am referring to these fully priced if not overinflated auctions and not necessarily hand reg’s.
MHB says
Damir
None of those make any sense to me.
None are using the natural .me language and therefore they become like the others say just another extension.
MHB says
Jody
Interest point.
I haven’t seen .it or .us ever marketed as a verb just an extension, so maybe godaddy is ery smart.
The only other extension marketed as something other than 2 letters is .tv and I see that in use in the US and overseas by television stations
Nick says
The average person outside the EU can’t grab a .it DN with just a few mouse clicks, which limits use in the US of A.

BTW, in response to someone’s inquiries the auctions list can be found here:

CBS has a major music site coming soon at play.it

I know this thread is a few days old, but I was hoping to get a few comments on whether I should bid for the domain name talkto.me? I’m in an auction with 22hrs left and the bids are up to $2,010. I’ve already snagged godhelp.me (for like $50) as a vanity name for a blog and had hoped to build a dynamic community esque site (not social networking) site around talkto.me in the same vanity sort of way. Initially, I figure that’s a nutty amount of cash to drop on a domain name for 2 years, but when I realize vanity license plates here are around $500, it doesn’t seem so crazy for a worldwide plug.
I agree that generic non verb or catchy .me names might have limited appeal or worth, but this seems like it might be one that has staying power. What are your thoughts on this name and whether I should bid up to the amount I’m willing to “possibly lose” by snagging this name?
thanks for any thoughts (plz make ’em quick the auction is ticking!! 😉

I’m in that auction as well.
Personally I think $2K is too much.
I dropped out at $1K.
Its a two word .me domain.
My personal opinion
cdude says
thanks for your thoughts MHB… I dropped out too – at $3K that’s just crazy. For me at least – I don’t have an established enough plan that is dependent on that name to pay that kind of cash.
Though I could see verizon or t-mobile easily paying lots for it if they had a campaign in mind…

>Guys don’t forget that these auction are not even for the reserved names, that is the names the registry held back for the purpose of auctioning.<
Yes and many of the .me domains selling now are already selling for at 5 figures!! –
The .me domains semes VERY HOT already even the best have not yet been up for sale.
Davey says
There are many people who only consider .com to be important. However, there are many cases where these .me .us .it etc can be use cleverly. From a marketing point of view they are invaluable.
IE on TV 2 split tested ads would run.
insureandgo.com
insure.me
.com had already gone okay. but insure.me still has more of an edge.
That’s part of my 2 cents worth….
