Anyone have an opinion on the domain NaturalBeauty.com selling for $64,900 at NameJet.com
Personally think its very high
Some other big money domains in the last few days at NameJet.com include:
autotags.com for $17,900
newproperties.com for $9,200

NaturalBeauty.com is a good name. It flows and has rhythm. Perfect for beauty articles and selling cosmetics. Well worth the 64k for a startup.

From a PPC point of view it’s waaay too expensive. I agree it’s a “natural beauty” for development though.

Both points are valid which brings us to another point: The true value of a domain is always related to who the buyer is, what the buyer has in mind. If Bill Gates wishes to buy this domain for a new product he believes he can turn to a billion dollar business, because bill Gates proven track record and personal confidence, Bill can afford to pay 50 millions for it, even a hundred. Can you than say the domain is worth 50 or a 100 millions? In the right hands, it sure is the case.

I agree with you in the right hands any pretty good name can be worth a millions or tens of million, however this domain was bought by a domainer for resale.
My opinion is that when we all have a finite amount to spend on domains, this domain is at that price has limited upside and that money could be better spent

For 64.9K, I would assume the buyer of NaturalBeauty.com has a strong development plan. And with a strong development plan, the true value of a name is in the eye of the beholder.

I don’t believe he does, as I have had contact with him already.

I figured I’d chime in briefly for myself here since the topic has been started and I am the one who bought it. I could go on and on but I guess my own blog would be for those purposes.
Boy this domain can be developed in quite a number of ways. It is perfect for beauty and higher premium cosmetic supplies. It is perfect as a beauty and health resource, think WebMD type of information resource but for everything relating to beauty lifestyle and supplies (and aff marketing obviously). It can also be perfect for an adult site – there is only one Playboy, there’s only one Perfect10 now too, and there’s only one NaturalBeauty. In a crowded adult world branding like this certainly would help.
And finally one could even go low tech (read: low upfront development investment) and make it into an authority beauty “blog”. Just think of the success Sugar Inc has been having with sites such as http://bellasugar.com/. Now what’s more intuitive, “bellasugar” or “naturalbeauty”…
A few writers, great presentation, a bit of marketing, and you can be lining up advertisers from the likes of Chanel, Dove, Victoria Secret, Sephora, Vidal, etc.. If you think of that, the investment into the domain alone would be covered pretty fast once this gets off the ground, this isn’t any AdSense revenue to compare. And the benefit with blogging is if done right it will spread more virally than traditional “store outlets” because the proper way would be to grow a community around it, not just a product.
As for why I bought it and the claim that a “domainer” bought it. While I think I am not fit to be called a domainer just yet, I did buy it because the potential to me is very wide here, and as said in the hands of the right company any of these plans, IMO, are winners. With that said, I completely agree that for a domainer who’s in the business of selling domain names primarily (like admin?) it’s way too much money because the returns would not be as high. You could spend $65k on oodles of other names and in the long term spread the risk AND make more money. The reason I bought is because it’s a one of a kind name, and whether I resell it to a company who “gets it” and wants to develop it, ultimately doesn’t make a big difference for me. I’d just as happily keep this domain until some later date if a proper sale does not work out.
The reason I don’t develop it now is because I don’t have the time. I already run two businesses, one Internet radio and another colocation hosting, and a third startup due out in a few months. I’ll either put this for later to develop myself, or sell it now because I don’t have time, either way a win win. So what does a “domainer” mean anyway in that case, everyone’s got different goals and scenerios.

Ari –
Looks like you’ve done your due dilligence to justify your purchase price. Great name – look forward to seeing you finished project once developed.
It’s fascinating to see the evolution of “Domainers” to full-fledged developers in order to realize the “highest and best use” of a great domain. I’m excited to see how this will affect the domain industry….and ultimately domain values!

This post brings up some great points. What is the worth of a domain name? The fact that Ari Shohat can sit on this name feeling that he has something royal tells a lot about the power of NaturalBeauty.com
Ari has all the options open to him. He can let the name appreciate, flip it, PPC it, lease it, develop it and brand it. He has many more options than a lesser name like GroundSwell.com because he has so many options of revenue available. It is not so much what Ari plans to do with it. The name has inherit worth.

any idea who was/were the underbidder/s?

namejet.com unlike snapnames.com does not provide that info

Happy new year!
Actually upon looking into traffic patterns and content at Domai.com and Femjoy.com I’d have to say Natural Beauty dot com was a steal even at that price. For someone who does net radio subscriptions for a living already, charging for images and using the branding leverage is a no brainer to pay back the cost within a year, much more with serious promotional efforts. I am finding it hard to think of flipping it, if only we could all get a clone to get more *time* 🙂 And no I am not trying to hype anything up, just trying to add to the discussion of how evaluations are made by some buyers.
