A look at the top Blog related sales of all time

November 21, 2016 by Raymond Hackney

Looks like a lot of people are finding disappointment with one of the new gtlds that many expressed some enthusiasm over.

.Blog started general availability today, some have found domains they thought they registered but they did not.

Shane Bellone was rather outspoken this morning on Twitter,

Do not invest in .blog. They are as bad if not worse than the other registries. Avoid at all cost. @automattic

— Shane Bellone (@shanebellone) November 21, 2016

Mike found this:

.blog domain shows at ICANN as not registered, not reserved, but can’t be registered https://t.co/JBhgQOcfND

— The Domains (@thedomains) November 21, 2016

There is a thread on Namepros accusing .Blog of running a bait and switch.

So I decided to take a look at the top blog related sales. Data courtesy of Namebio.

There is a false assumption here that available, or lack of thereof, of domains appear in WHOIS; WHOIS is about registration data, and that only applies to registered domains. A WHOIS query for an unavailable but not registered domain doesn’t need to answer anything. Some registries do answer those and it’s their discretion to do it, but the only authoritative availability check is a “domain check” transaction at the registry-registrar interface, EPP. There is no way to tell for sure, from outside the retail chain, that a string is reserved or not, if it’s premium-priced or not, if premium-priced whether it applies to create or create and renewal…

… if that information is relevant to domain investors, and considering this thread I think it likely is, then one needs to find a reliable registrar that will pass along full information from the registry. WHOIS misinformation leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.

I get that people are disappointed they didn’t get what they wanted, but I think there’s a lot of lazy assumptions here. Shane has complained elsewhere that he was “the only one that ordered” business.blog. Um, no.

I ordered business.blog and food.blog because I noticed they were both offered at “regular” price at get.blog. After ponying up my $500 for the two of them on the odd chance that I was going to get lucky I did more research. Both were added to the zone on October 10th. Long before the opening of Landrush.

In one week I’m joining the folks at Automattic to work on the registrar side of the business. If I thought for a moment that anyone at Automattic was involved in any bait and switch or BS of that nature I wouldn’t be doing so. It’s fine to call out any company for what they actually ARE doing, whether that is from malice or negligence, but at least do your own diligence before you make such allegations.

This coming from someone going to work for the company. Most think their actions are deplorable your comment changes nothing.

Couple hours ago TheWall.blog was registered. Already redirects to an existing Python programming site. Mighty impressive. At 2pm eastern time today, it was still available and most likely base price.
