According to a report appearing in ename.cn, the domain name 688.com just sold for about $1.5 Million dollars.
According to the report the sales price was 9,580,000 RMB which according to today’s exchange rate is $1,496,290.52.
The domain name 688.com did change ownership yesterday.
The domain was owned by a XiaoFeng Lin of China at the domain name registrar MAFF Inc. until December 5th when the whois information was updated to reflect LinXiaoFeng of DotMedia Limited as the new owner. The domain name registrar also changed to eName Technology Co.,Ltd.
Just a couple of months ago we reported that the domain name 588.com sold for $1 Million dollars.
If the sale of 688.com makes DNJournal.com‘s list of 2015 top sales it would become the second highest reported domain name sale of the year.
The top sales list would also reflect, after Rich Schwartz sale of Porno.com, the next top ten sales would be all either two letter .com domain names (LL.com) or three number .Com’s (NNN.com).
The original story was published in Chinese and translated using Google Translate.

Just WOW. Prices rise and rise for sort numerics.
@PotentialNames says
Yes that’s because Chinese loves short numerics. Just wait until there’s none left for sale in the .com space, then interest would likely shift to .business tlds for Chinese businesses, e.g — 48.business

I have a 3 letter domain – where’s the best place to sell to get the best price?

MAFF.com and dotmedia are all the same entity. this guy is one of the top 10 backorder system for chinese clients. he has also his own domains.
transfers to Ename seems to frequently keep the original whois information.
i am guessing that that a chinese buyer purchase the domain through dotmedia broker
jose says
the domain seems to have been bought on August 2010 by William Lin of dotmedia, also know has XiaoFeng Lin and LinXiaoFeng, from a guy named Andrew Gibbons from San Francisco. at the time I was buying NNN.com for less than 10k so maybe it was sold at the same level.
the current whois is still showing William Lin has the owner so, if the report from ename is correct, we will have to see the new owner in a few days.
it looks as a private sale of William Lin and not a brokered sale by him.

Another outstanding sale!! These enormous sales validate how important it is to stay on top of new buying trends and invest accordingly. Congratulations to the buyer and seller! Domain names are proving themselves year after year to be excellent producers of tremendous ROI unlike any other asset.
Numeric Shares says
Lately these sales are just about expected, for me the real interest is the flow on effect and where the numerics will be in 5 years? Questions like will the values of the 5n and higher really increase as all hope? Or will that dreaded bubble burst? Perhaps over this time frame it will happen more than once? Some real historical stuff coming our way!
