Back in September the other major organization that hears UDRP and the only one to decide cases filed under the Uniform Rapid Suspension System (“URS”) the National Arbitration Forum (NAF) announced their stats for 2014.
So now that we have the stats for both those organizations we can see what the case loads in terms of decisions in 2014 for UDRP and URS proceedings.
In 2014 the NAF decided a total of 1,836 disputes.
1,557 were under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (“UDRP”) and 218 under the Uniform Rapid Suspension System (“URS”).
Of the UDRP cases filed with the NAF, there were 3,174 total domain names at issue; 259 UDRP cases involved 311 domain names registered in new gTLDs (generic top level domains
In 1,046 UDRP cases with the NAF, the domain holder did not submit a formal response and 1,274 of cases went to a single member panel, and complainants prevailed 92% of the time, up from a Forum average of 88%.
Where respondents did respond, the success rate in having the complaint denied was 46%.
259 UDRP cases involved 311 domain names registered in new gTLDs (generic top level domains).
For the 218 URS cases, there were 247 total domain names at issue and, of the cases that received a Determination in 2014, 195 of the domain names were suspended for being in violation of trademark registrations worldwide.
As for WIPO there were 2,634 UDRP’s filed in 2014 (WIPO does not handle URS cases) involving 5,603 domain names
So there were 4,191 UDRP and 218 URS cases involving just over 9K domain names in a world of 115.6 Million .com’s, 3.7 million new gTLD’s, and around 288 million domain names worldwide (all numbers as of December 31, 2014) (also please note that not all ccTLD are subject to UDRP policy).
If I divide 288 Million domain names by 9,034 domain names subject to a UDRP or URS I get a percentage of 0.003%
0.003% is the percentage of registered domain names to those subject to UDRP’s or URS in 2014.
WIPO publishes raw stats including the number of case and the number of domains involved in a UDRP since a party can seek control of more than one domain in a single UDRP
Over 65% of domain names subject to a UDRP filed with WIPO were for .Com’s; Over 18% were for .net’s and all other extensions were in the single digits.
218 UDRP’s filed with WIPO were over New gTLD’s domains.
477 UDRP’s filed with WIPO were over ccTLD’s domains (country code domain name)
