If you define the length as the number of characters until first dot, 25% of top 1,000 sites fall within one to six chars. 75% is already covered by #12 or less.

When you look at the graph of the average length as you add more top sites, it deeps at the first few dozens to 6.5 jumps back to 7 in the top 100 then gradually raises to 8.
