Say Hello To The Next Hit New gTLD .Tips, Breaks Out With Over 8K Registrations

February 27, 2014 by Michael Berkens

.Tips went into General Availability today and from the zone file it appear the new gTLD has surpassed 8,000 registrations.

Based on its numbers .Tips is already the 4th most popular new gTLD.

.Tips to me is in the same category as .Guru which has more than 38,000 registration and the soon to be released .Ninja and the later to come .Expert

The domains are priced at $25 at Godaddy making Donuts there registration fee of $185K back on day 1 not counting Sunrise and EAP registrations which are included in the 8K domain number but a much higher cost.

It appears the registry held back very few domain and that the collision blocked list was small, as many good domains were register

On a related note the domain name Yoga.Guru sold in a Sedo auction for less than $1,200 today

Here are some interesting registrations

Right now we’re in a transient condition. Registration volume is affected by the sequence of the various nTLD launches, by the effectiveness of various PR campaigns, and also by market saturation / dilution and buyer fatigue.

But transients aren’t reliable indicators of the long-term, steady-state condition — which won’t be reached until a couple of years have purged the zone files of unwanted defensive and speculative registrations.

I’ll stick my neck out and make a long-term prediction — which is this:

.TIPS will far surpass .GURU and .NINJA and probably exceed .EXPERT in terms of long-term registration volume and the number of branded websites. “Tips” has remained a part of our language for a long time, whereas “Guru” and especially “Ninja” are faddish terms. .TIPS is less presumptuous than .EXPERT, shorter than .EXPERT, more serious than .NINJA, and less specifically oriented than .GURU. Tips can be offered an virtually any subject, whereas experts / gurus/ ninjas are only sought for a select few.

I think that’s a safe prediction. Safe or not, I’m on record making it. I’d say there’s at least a 50% chance we’ll see .TIPS overtake the others during 2014. I’d be shocked if that’s not the case by the 2-year point.

Thanks to you i was still able to register some:

    colorado
    montana

I agree with you Joseph on the long term numbers. Tips (which I don’t own any and have no other conflicts such as advertisers) will overtake a string like Guru or Ninja.

Is anybody else concerned that the most popular domains so far are the ones that seem designed to mislead gullible consumers with an aura of expertise?

I suspect that when .guru, .tips, and .expert domains start getting used, they’ll mostly be used by people who couldn’t get attention without a domain that makes them sound important.

These TLDs will either help scam a lot of people, and/or get a reputation as the last domain a sane person goes for expertise.

  6. Joseph Peterson says

    @Michael Bauser,

It’s true that a .GURU or .EXPERT website will be “dated on arrival”. By using .GURU or .EXPERT, any self-proclaimed “guru” or “expert” immediately signals to the world that he or she is a novice — at least in terms of online presence.

That may not be such a drawback for everybody. If the branding goals involve a bit of anti-cool, tongue-in-cheek self-deprecation, then “Guru” might work out just fine as a name. In 2013, [keyword]Guru.com would have been sufficient. Now, of course, registering 2 domains will be the only sensible way to protect that particular name choice.

I don’t see any way to use .EXPERT in an ironic way, however. So that word will be in serious trouble from overuse.

.TIPS is more innocuous. It makes no claims on authority. So, as I’ve said elsewhere, I like .TIPS the best and expect it to surpass the other two in quantity of registrations and developed sites.
