Return of The 10 Year .XXX Domain Block, Now You Don’t Even Need A Trademark

May 2, 2013 by Michael Berkens

At least one ICANN accredited domain name registrar is rolling out the 10 year .XXX domain name blocking program.

Encirca.com send out an email last night advertising:

“Block your Brand in .XXX for just $12/year”

“Back when .XXX launched also three years ago, it cost over $200 for a 10-year block of your brand name.   And eligibility for blocks was restricted to registered trademark owners.”

“For the month of May, EnCirca will be offering 10-year blocks in the .XXX top-level domain for just $120 for the entire ten year term.  ”

“Best of all, no registered trademark is required.

“A business may protect any company name or product name they wish, provided it is not already registered.

“Later this year, the first of hundreds of new extensions will start rolling out.  Included in these, the .XXX Registry has applied for .Sex, .Porn, and .Adult, all intended for adult content.   Provided these extensions are awarded to the .XXX Registry, then your .XXX domain will automatically be reserved for you in these new extensions when they become operational. ”

“Block your names today in .XXX and receive Peace of Mind that you will be protected in these new extensions.  All it costs is just $12/year.”

It’s marketing spin. It’s not really a block, they can just register the domain for you for 10 years at those prices, so they’re spinning it that way.

To the adult industry, the price may be the same, but the distinction is enormous. If Manwin registered its domains as 10 year blocks, then the world’s largest adult company just made a commitment that, for the next ten years, it will not be conducting business on .xxx sites.

So far I haven’t seen any of these registered to them

    youporn.xxx

    brazzers.xxx

    Manwin.xxx

All shown as reserved by the registry as they always have been

So what does “Reserved by the Registry” mean? ICM blocked Manwin names for free? ICM intends to release them for sale in the future?
