Microsoft’s interest in FB has nothing to do with their taking a cool, objective look at the business and buying it on value. MS is sitting on a mountain of dusty, molding cash and has been on a furious hunt for some kind of tech whale that will allow them to diversify their dying core business and keep the brand relevant.
Their browser has one foot on the grave the other on the banana peel, their OS took a body blow with increasing adoption of alternatives, they never really made it big in search (although the Bing story has yet to be fully written), they did OK in gaming but that isn’t as durable as they’d like and that whole market is one major ‘system-exclusive’ away from taking it up the ass.
They couldn’t deal on Yahoo (which was to their benefit), they tried to get wet in social media.
You see this kind of thing when G tries to buy Groupon, when MS tries to buy FB, we’ll probably start seeing it more and more with Apple- old tech stalwarts with a metric fuckload of cash trying to figure out how to diversity their income streams and remain relevant as things change.
I wouldn’t be taking my lead on FB shares because of what MS was trying to do.
