ICM Registry, the company behind the .XXX top-level domain (TLD), today announced it has received has received over 42,000 applications for .XXX domain names since the September 7, 2011 launch of the Sunrise Period “with thousands more pouring in each day”.
The number of applications already received is over five times what ICM had anticipated.
“We are very pleased, but not surprised, by this overwhelming response to the availability of .XXX domains,” said Stuart Lawley, CEO of ICM Registry. “The applications have been well balanced between brand owners inside the adult industry and those non-adult brands that want to protect their trademarks.”
At 42,000 registrations .XXX has well exceeded other recent launches with .mobi and .Co having under 15,000 Sunrise applications and .asia which had 30,000
With 5 days to go and as many companies wait until the end to get their applications in, you would have to expect well over 50,000 by the time the sunrise period closes.
The Sunrise period ends this Friday, October 28, 2011, leaving qualified brand owners who have not yet exercised their “Sunrise” rights with five days to do so.
Once the Sunrise period expires, any brand owners who want to secure their corresponding .XXX domain name will have to do so through the same process as the other general applicants.
The first opportunity to apply for .XXX domain names for members of the adult entertainment industry who did not qualify as trademark or brand holders during Sunrise, will be the 17-day “Landrush” period, beginning on November 8.
General Availability of all remaining .XXX domain names will begin on December 6, 2011.

Adult industry existed for thousands of years , so :”Lets Be Adult About It” says it all…well done ICM
Derick Stein says
Correct me if im wrong, but those numbers sound awful. Would think porno websites would be way more sales for this particular tld. Guess porno business just isnt what it used to be.
MHB says
Derick
This is just for the sunrise period principally trademark owners.
There is still landrush and General Availability coming
.Co did less than 15,000 .XXX will probably wind up with 4X during the Sunrise
larry fischer says
whats the procedure if someone applies during this period who has a .com, net ,etc and wants the matching .xxx.
MHB says
Larry
You can apply under Sunrise AD
You won’t be able to get it if its restricted or reserved by the registry so don’t plan on getting xxx.xxx that way
)));;
But if not restricted or reserved you can apply for it now through any .XXX accredited domain registrar period closes on the 28th
Gazzip says
“But if not restricted or reserved you can apply for it now through any .XXX accredited domain registrar period closes on the 28th”
Any idea how many have been reserved or already sold by the registrar?
MHB says
Gazzip
The Sunrise has three types of applications
The one Mr. Fischer just asked about which is AD, then there is an application for company with a trademark that operates in the adult space, think Playboy or Hustler that is called AT
Then there is a AB which is for those non-adult TM (or actually adult TM as well) that want there domain blocked from resolving.
All of these close on October 28th at your favorite registrar that is participating in .XXX (about 70)
Uzoma says
Correct me if I’m right, shouldn’t discussion about adult domains be taking place at a xxx site? Isn’t that the whole idea about granting the tld?
up.biz says
42,000 applications, That means most of the common and sexy names are gone already..
Ben Elza says
@Uzoma, Yes, and it will be after the launch.
larry fischer says
@ MHB
Is there a list of restricted or reserved by the registry to view. Otherwise anyone trying to reserve one of these domains would be wasting their money putting in an application if the domain they want to purchase is on that list.
MHB says
Larry
Wow I hope I get some commission on your pickups
))::
So if a domain is reserved or restricted it should not allow the application to be submitted
I don’t think there is a list of restricted/reserved domains but if you go to ICM whois and type the word in you will see if its restricted or reserved or owned
http://icmregistry.com/whois/
freeporn.xxx
owned domain
xxx.xxx
reserved domain
wlwl.xxx “not found”
If the record comes back not found then its available for Sunrise.
Also if your applying for the domain owned AD then the domain must have been registered in February 2010.
FX says
and what if our TM’ed owned domain / term is showing
“Reserved by ICM Registry for Premium Generic Domain Names Program”
what exactly does that mean ?
MHB says
FX
So I don’t own or work for the registry
But if your asking for my opinion then I would say it depends on what the TM is
If it is a unique well known brand like hustler or playboy then the TM holder should get a chance to get it in Sunrise.
However we all know that some generic terms have gotten a TM somewhere so if its a TM on “sex” or f*ck then I would say no
My basic rule of thumb is if its a TM you would respect enough as a domainer to give up a domain you owned based off of it then it should be available for sunrise, if its a TM you would tell the owner to screw off wanting you domain based off of it, then I have NP with ICM saying the same thing.
But at the end of the day I don’t get a vote on it
FX says
Mike, my Q was what if YOU ARE The trademark holder on a non generic unique term,
and ICM has Reserved it for itself ?
FX says
@ Derick Stein, you are correct.
95% of the industry has left the building in the last 3 years.
MHB says
FX
I guess I would contact ICM
Stuart Lawley says
@FX
Write to us at premium@icmregistry.com and we can take it from there.
Ben Elza says
“Registrants who are not members of the Sponsored Community may submit a Registration Request to register a standard non-resolving name in the .XXX sTLD. These names will not resolve, and queries on these names will return an NX domain result”
Can any one please explain whats it meaning of :”These names will not resolve, and queries on these names will return an NX domain result”?!
Does it mean that If a registrant is not part of the adult community he/she can not resell their “non resolving” registered domain .xxx name?!!
Charlie says
I own a adult domain non-generic and working website.
I have the trademark for it but they won’t let me register my domain.xxx because they have reserved thousands of popular words for a later auction.
When i try to register it it says “RESERVED”. My lawyer has contacted them without response.
Also they have sold lots of valuable domains before september to investors without telling nobody, you can check register date in some generic domains.
It’s not fair and maybe not legal.
MHB says
Charlie
Did you contact ICM about it directly?
You can find Mr. Lawley’s contact info above in the comment section
what says
maybe adult tm owners can band together and file a class action suit against icm?
like when tm owners sued google for adsense.
