Official Announcement On Domainfest Live Auction, Now A Online Auction Which Will End June 15th

June 8, 2011 by Michael Berkens

We just received this notice from Oversee regarding the Live auction from DomainFest which was cancelled today due to technical difficulties.

The auction will now be held online only and has already started.

The online auction will end on a week from today on June 15th at 3:15pm EST.

The extended auction will close on June 22nd at 3:15Pm EST.

We wish all sellers and buyers best of luck.

Here is the official announcement:

“”This morning, several of Oversee.net’s web-based services experienced outages.  This included the Moniker and SnapNames platforms, and as a result, we were unable to conduct the DOMAINfest Barcelona 2011 domain live auction, which was scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern time.  Though we deeply regret this disruption, we were obligated to protect the integrity of the auction.

Auctions for the live and extended lots of names will be handled as follows:

We will not conduct a live auction for the lot of names scheduled for sale in Barcelona.

Accordingly, the live auction lots have been assigned to a discrete online auction.  This auction has just commenced, and will conclude on Wednesday, June 15, at 3:15 p.m. U.S. Eastern time.

SnapNames and Moniker conduct an extended online auction for additional seller-submitted names.   This auction will begin shortly.  This auction will conclude on Wednesday, June 22, at 3:15 p.m. U.S. Eastern time.

More information and links to both auctions are available at: http://domainauctions.moniker.com/2011/DOMAINfest-Barcelona”

Another live auction disaster. In my view the whole format needs to be binned due to expense and unreliability. Online auctions make a lot more sense.

    Hey Snoop:
Don’t you think there is a higher chance for shill bidding for the online only format?

I think what they need is trusted “independent auditors” with a hawkish eye.

    Cheers.

Live auctions are typically fully of shill bidding from what I can see of it Domo.

What percentage of Moniker auctions were down due to technicalities? How many live auctions has Moniker held over the years, and out of them, how many went down? Is this the first and only one? Incredible you would smear a company and its great track record over one event!

Moniker is doing pretty well, as far as I’m concerned, notwithstanding a smear campaign from the fringes.

Happens all the time with live auctions, not just Moniker, evenyone running these events, every second one seems to have some kind of issue,

“This year, the technology sputtered causing numerous delays and some confusion about who had the high bid (an bidder onsite or a bidder online).”

“Due to technical difficulties, Rick Latona made a difficult decision this evening and has opted to move the TRAFFIC auction to Saturday morning. ”

“Today Domain Madness was supposed to hold its third annual auction on the new Boxcar platform. Unfortunately the platform wilted under the pressure. I logged in an hour after the auction was supposed to start, only to see organizers call it quits.”

    http://www.dncrunch.com/?p=10925

“The auction got off to a late start – it was over half an hour late. I’m not sure how common this is, but given that the auction was expected to last for 5 hours, this seemed not only unprofessional but also unreasonable. Of course, with the conference going on there may have been a good reason for the delay.”

And who could ever forget Moniker’s “hallway” auction a few years ago when they didn’t rent the room for long enough.

I think the only live domain auction platform not to have any problems over the year has been Aftermarket.com which held three live auctions without any issues.

Hi, @ Snoop, I may have overreacted. I reread your post, and you are fed up with auctions in general . . .

DDOS attack is not a programming error. Amazon, eBay – big name sites with the top in security software have been in the news for being down, and that is what this likely is, though it is not identified that way. Therefore, it is no reflection on the technical operation. DDOS is its own beast. It’s intentional, organized attack on a server.
