At a standing room only crowd at ICANN Bill Clinton chatted about the importance of technology, moving the Internet forward to create jobs and get the economy back on track
Some of the important takeaways of the speech and Q & A session that followed for me were the following:
“Back when I came into office the average cell phone weighted 5 lbs and only 50 sites on the web, by the time I left office there were 36 million sites on the net.”
“The country needs a a new source of economic activity every 5-8 years.”
“In the time leading up to the meltdown the economy was lead by housing, consumer products and financial services.”
“But when I was in office tech jobs were 8% of jobs but 30% of job growth and 35% of income growth.
“What happened to America is we had no new sources of income”
“So as we go forward what is the next decades source of new jobs?
“In all other issues you deal with, this will be lurking under the surface”
“You want to keep the Internet forever young”
“At some point all institutions are run by those wanting to keep the present and not the future its nothing but human nature but that’s not healthy so how do we create tomorrow without being stuck in yesterday?
“It’ss very important to get the Internet right”
“Its not only important because we have 2 billion users but they know how to use it, to know useful things”
“and going back to the day where the average cell phone weighted 5 lbs and there were only 50 sites on the web I think its just beginning and its an interesting time to be alive.”
“It’s important to stumble in the right direction.”
“The Internet isn’t a zero sum game, we should be striving for a world were we can all win”
“in reference to porn sites if its crime in the real word it should be a crime in cyberspace, but you should not unduly burden cyberspace with issues that don’t exist in the real world just because we are scared of access”
Those are the comments of the Former President that stood out.
My takeaway from Mr. Clinton’s remarks is the Internet is going to play an increasing important role not only in life but in creating jobs and moving the economy forward, but do to so the Internet needs to keep moving forward.
Although he did not refer to .XXX extension directly he did speak of Internet porn and his statement would indicate he would have been in favor of approval of the extension.
As the new gTLD process moves forward billions of dollars will flow into the economy and cause job creation.
While many out have been happy stopping with the 5 lb cell phone others wanted more choice and selection and in turn that helped move the economy forward.
I think the former President laid down the gauntlet to ICANN to keep the ball moving forward.
I also agree with the Former President that the domain industry isn’t a zero sum game.
There can and will be multiple winners.
.Com owners can continue to be successful while new extensions and new investor can enjoy success in new gTLD verticals.
It certainly isn’t one wins and the expense of the loss of another.
My feeling is that if Pres. Clinton had wanted to say anything of interest, or leave the audience with an unambiguous message, he would have.
I have a great long time friend – very good marketing type – who – because we are competitive – continually downplays .coms – and relies on Apps and QR codes (Square Bar codes with enbedded URLs) to promote his marketing and advertising efforts.
And he always comes back with:
“if I could only finds new ways to get my stuff in front of the right people”
And I reply – that is exactly what .com intuitive Direct Navigation is – it is just another channel to get your stuff in front of the right people – no non.com will ever replace that.
End result is .com’s are just beginning to mature in that 5-8 year window President William Jefferson Clinton speaks about – the only thing that will replace the .com is consumer buying vehicles – at which time my dough will be long invested in the next 5-8 new source of economic activity.
To be fair, he was paid to give this message 🙂

The thing is if all these suits have already decided amongst themselves that a) there will never be ANY new competition allowed like .sex .porn etc and b) insiders already know that perhaps ALL adult material may/or will be forced to move to .xxx at a later date then it obviously means they’ll be far more valuable in the future.

It seems highly unlikely that a small group of I* insiders could come up with a “master plan”. Instead, they make small incremental decisions that always end up benefiting them. Follow the Money.
They are also masters at fabricating distractions but those can be chaotic and random and also have no “master plan”. Those distractions often cost you time & money but not them.
