There are too many extension the way it is – I vote NO to .XXX, NO to any of the proposed gTLD’s, and while we’re at it, let’s get rid of half the ccTLD’s out there and close ICAN’T down – the future of the web should be placed into more capable hands than ICAN’T.

    Not at all.

ICANN will be mostly focused on the 4 or 5 major Lawsuits and/or Legal challenges coming their way

Will those legal challenges exhaust their massive Cash Reserves ?

Will those legal challenges be considered in the new IANA public/private partnership with Uncle Sam ?

Will the 2 or 3 major new networks being launched render ICANN moot ?

Will rational people look back on these blogs and say, “What a waste of human time” ?

    @Carter’s Jimmy

Just curious, which top 10 TLDs would you shut down first?

“Do you think ICANN will approve .XXX tomorrow?”
    ====

Can someone explain what “approve” means ?

Is ICANN selling ICM a Franchise for the .XXX Registry ?

Is ICANN guaranteeing wide-spread distribution of ICM’s .XXX DNS ?

or is ICANN simply saying to Uncle Sam that “ICM has been properly vetted to have a License.to.Print.Money for the .XXX Community” ? and Uncle Sam is expected to take it from there ?

What would the scenario be assuming ICANN “approves” .XXX ?
Didn’t ICANN “approve” .XXX long ago ?

    Big Lie

Approved means they ICANN will add the extension to the root.

Yes they did approve it in June 2005 as the article details and the pdf file that is highlighted above also discusses

Does it matter? Too many porn sites out there as it is, with most of them having a very difficult time making it. These aren’t the days of the few; Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, and what, Oui? Not interested in the least.

probably ICANN may approve soon the .XXX to start a new big TLD business, as happened with .CO

It’s a done deal, get used to it!

  12. .ME of course says

    March 17, 2011 at 6:23 pm

According to my records that would be then:

    .gf
    .lr
    .mq
    .kn
    .gn
    .er
    .km
    .gu
    .fk
    .gw
    .wf
    .kp
    .so
    .yt
    .td

On top of the following dead zones:

    .nato
    .cs
    .dd
    .mh
    .pw
    .zr
    .um
    .bl
    .eh
    .mf
    .bv
    .gb
    .pm
    .sj

  13. .ME of course says

    March 17, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Then also these are not in top 100, and well below .me and even .ly:

    .travel
    .int
    .mil
    .asia
    .pro
    .coop
    .aero
    .tel
    .museum
    .jobs
    .arpa

Yes, you may erase them. Not many people will notice.

    Then what?

Your point well taken, but everyone knows what XXX means and it is quite memorable

Anyone care to guess which ccTLD is being utilized by more Silicon Valley start-ups than any other over the past 3-months? It’s not .co, not .tv, not .me….it’s:

    .io

“Approved means they ICANN will add the extension to the root.”
    ——————-

It would be interesting to see a detailed technical explanation for what that means.

Are the .XXX Name Servers and NS RRs ready to be added tomorrow ?
if so, why not publish the names of those and IP addresses

  19. MHB says

    March 17, 2011 at 7:20 pm

    Big

Of course not added tomorrow, they will have to enter into a contract with ICM and a date will be scheduled with go live at least several months away

  20. Gazzip says

    March 17, 2011 at 7:25 pm

I had to look up to see what .io was, I don’t remember seeing that one before, they’ll have their work cut out for them using that.

.io .io its off to work we go 😉

    Tomorrow being the LAST DAY!
and then they can cut n run for the HILLS.

I HEARD THAT THE THE LIMOS WILL BE OUT BACK,
WITH THE MOTORS RUNNING FOR THAT QUICK GETAWAY!

  22. Alan says

    March 17, 2011 at 7:59 pm

With the exception .com porn site owners, what is the big deal with this extension that has
everyone so upset?? IMO, it is just adding more competition for the porn buck and will
ultimately lower prices for those who enjoy it.

  23. Chris says

    March 17, 2011 at 8:27 pm

As a member of the adult industry (someone who’s been running adult sites since 2001), I vote NO to the .xxx sTLD. The .xxx sTLD has no support from the adult webmaster community and therefor does not meet it’s requirements.

good question for a poll … “how many domains will sell the .xxx TLD?”

    a) less than 10,000

    b) between 10,000 and 50,000

    c) between 50,000 and 100,000

    d) between 100,000 and 300,000

    e) between 300,000 and 1,000,000

    f) more than a million

Don’t kid yourself, .CO is a deadzone too. Just because they have their people lurking in the comment section of blogs and forums, hyping the extension up, and they are involved in a huge marketing blitz, does not make it successful. Numbers mean nothing. In the end DEVELOPMENT is all that matters. 10,000,000 domain names can be registered, but if they are all to DOMAINERS, then it means nothing.

  29. jp says

    March 17, 2011 at 10:03 pm

No, then they would have nothing left but to fly around and have fancy meetingings discussing the tlds only. What a nightmare that would be.

But my short answer is NO.

The GAC letter contents might give ICANN reason to find a way to further postpone approval of the ICM contract!

  33. .ME of course says

    March 18, 2011 at 4:51 am

    .CO is doing rather well.

.TLD might be another pet project for a guy with deep pockets. So what?

.XXX, if approved will get more that 500k registration over two years given that other newTLDs will not be approved.

  34. TheBigLieSociety says

    March 18, 2011 at 7:49 am

The new Legal Theory (aka SPIN) is that ICM applied under the OLD ICANN that does not really exist any longer. That was the JPA ICANN that was replacedby the NEW ICANN which is not tied to the U.S. Government.

Can ICM compel the U.S. Government to resurrect the OLD ICANN ? Doubtful

Will the NEW ICANN continue to twist and turn and bob and weave its way to more delays ? Likely, after all it is just learning how to navigate without Uncle Sam.

Will all this split the root or split the NET ? Guaranteed. The question is which NET the NEW ICANN chooses to dominate. Many people will be happy to take the other road, once the NEW ICANN votes today.

One of the best parts about BINARY is you have TWO choices 0 or 1.

If Vinton Cerf selects 0 some people will select 1.
If Vinton Cerf selects 1 some people will select 0.

    It is 100% predictable.

not if adopted by all big internet companies as “the” standard TLD
