ICANN Is Coming To Toronto in 2012

March 11, 2011 by Michael Berkens

ICANN just announced that its October meeting for 2012 will be held in Toronto Canada.

The meeting will be held October 14-19, 2012 at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel.

The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), which runs the .CA ccTLD will host the event.

Hopefully they will still not be debating whether to approve .XXX or the new gTLD program by that meeting.

    I love Toronto.
However, is there something we don’t know about Toronto?

Icann likes to have the meetings in risky places.
(I don’t need to list all of them in the recent past.)

I’m also impressed that Icann knew that S.F. was going to
experience the residue of the tsunami today.

Now, what does Icann know is going to happen in Toronto next year?
Is there going to be a revolt and Toronto will attempt to
    succeed from Canada?
And, will it become our 51st state?

Good point, but just 2 months later the world is going to end anyway so I wouldn’t worry about it too much

Toronto is the Birthplace of Modern Domaining

It is the place where .XXX was born and still has not seen the light of day

People can tour the jails where DNS Revolutionaries (Like George Washington) were incarcerated

Toronto is also home to many people who can talk out of BOTH sides of their mouths and game the ICANN system – They are billionaires now

    $12 Million Dollars! Golly Gee,
    can you say R a c k e t e e r i n g.
    ===

So what has $12 million bought ICM?

    * Sponsorships for a number of conferences at which there were votes for .XXX.

    * An independent Review Process that voted in favor of ICM on the issue of “sponsored” community (i.e. the adult entertainment community) even though no one from the adult entertainment community was questioned or interviewed in the process.

    * An ICANN insider, Becky Burr, to represent ICM in all ICANN matters—did I mention that she was on ICANN’s Accountability and Transparency committee for a good portion of her time, representing ICM to ICANN?

    * An ICANN Board Chair adamantly in favor of pushing .XXX through.

    * An ICANN Board member, Sebastian Bachollet, hired to be on the IFFOR Board (can you say conflict of interest?)

    * A shortened public comment period at the San Francisco conference—two hours rather than the usual five hours, in an attempt to silence the adult community’s public voice.

    * ICM’s ability to conceal the information they submitted as proof of sponsorship support, knowing full well that the actual sponsorship community easily would refute the “proof” submitted.

    * A vote by the Board to move forward with the process even though they knew and stated publicly during the board meeting that what they were voting on was a lie.

“why not open .CA registrations…as successful as .CO domains!”
    ===

    That is already the case…
    .LA – Los Angeles
    .CA – CAlifornia
    .CO – COlorado

2-Letter ASCII TLDs are staged for all 50 States…

Good news, Maybe one or two domain conferences will show up as well. I always liked .ca for California. 🙂
    StateofCalifornia.ca it just looks good.

Question, when was the last time tat ICANN made a decision about something new, or passed some sort of new legislation, or made something new effective?

  11. MHB says

    JP

    Good question

In quite a while, other than some IDN extensions and the IP allocation issues

Hmmm I guess we have to count those huh? Now let’s add up the total spent on all these ICANN meetings that resulted in these few minor decisions. So at that rate what does a small decision cost? Maybe that can give us an idea of what a final decision on gtlds will cost.
