The Public Interest Registry (PIR) announced today that .ORG has now surpassed over 9 million domain name registrations.
.Org registrations grew at 10.3% in 2010.
“Hitting the 9 million registration mark is a testament to both .ORG’s reputation and its impact within the Internet community,” said Brian Cute, CEO of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry. “.ORG remains a community-driven platform and has become the domain of choice for organizations, individuals, and companies to channel their passion toward a shared purpose with their community.”
“”This unparalleled growth is due in large part to key accomplishments achieved since .ORG’s inception in 1985. In the decades following the first .ORG registration – mitre.org, the domain has become the trusted domain of choice for a vast range of non-profits, associations, international corporations involved in cause marketing, open source software developers, and arts communities. As one of the original top-level domains, .ORG’s true power lies in its ability to generate interaction and conveys trust. For the past 25 years, .ORG has reshaped the online world by advancing knowledge, creating opportunities, driving conversations, and most importantly, building online communities.”””

Really interesting figures. Of course .org is most often associated with organisations, bodies and individuals but let’s not forget all the domainer registrations that will no doubt account for a significant proportion of that number.
As a developer and investor I’ve never really strayed too far from .coms but .orgs are hugely popular in this industry and I often hear good things about their rankability. Seen some strong sales too.

Wow, thats a fair few
Do many of them get much type-in traffic? I don’t have any .orgs at all, I quiet often see decent one worders dropping but never usually bother with them.
Surprisingly(to me) I’m in an auction at snapnames just now for Baldness.org
(1999 reg) – I have’nt decided if I’ll bid on it though.
Looking at your Avatar Jim you won’t be needing that one anytime soon 🙂

ive had luck in getting dot orgs to rank very well in the serps under a number of verticals, they would be my 2nd choice behind a dot com for almost every site that I planned to develop out for organic traffic

To be honest I’ve had most profit selling .org domains and even when developing product related .org’s they tend to rank very well in search engines. My second choice after .com’s .
