.Co Domain Names Go On Sale For $11.99 Starting Tonight

February 5, 2011 by Michael Berkens

I have received notices from several registrars and it appears that the retail price of .Co domain name registration fees are dropping in conjunction with the big Super Bowl Ad.

Dotster.com announced today that as of 7:30pm EST tonight they are beginning a 7 day sale for .Co registrations for just $11.99

The current price on Dotster, com for a .Co registration is $29.99

For all registrars that use a Logic Boxes back end the .CO sale begins around 8Pm

I heard through the GrapeVine that Godaddy.com will drop its price as of midnight tonight for .Co registrations also to $11.99 and run that promo price for one week in conjunction with the Super Bowl Promotion.

Also Dotster.com has .Co as it default extension on its site for new registrations already

You might well see .Co again show up as the default extension on drop down menus on many registrar sites for before tomorrow big game

The $11.99 price is for new registration and is not in effect for renewals.

this is what I’ve proposed/predicted just yesterday here:

    thedomains.com/2011/02/03/co-hits-the-front-page-of-the-la-times/#comment-75557

but, at this price, GoDaddy must sell over 1,000,000 of .CO domains to cover the costs of the Super Bowl ad

    is it possible to happen???

    Face

1st of although I don’t know for sure I would be absolutely shocked if .Co registry did not pay for part of this ad.

Its a cobranded ad promoting two companies, Godaddy and .Co.

Usually such ads are paid for by a combination of the two companies but of course don’t know the split but I’m going to assume something close to 50-50.

I don’t know what the wholes cost to Godaddy is but again only assuming Godaddy is not going to make more than a few dollars per registration at this price level.

However, the price drop is temporary ending sometime looking like sometime on the 12th.

Mr. Parsons from Godaddy in his remarks at Domainfest said that in past year the surge from the Super Bowl ad goes well into March with in many past years March was a stronger month than Feb so lets not assume that any of the parties are looking at making their ad money back in the 1st week but hope to get legs out of it for months to come.

Godaddy should make most of their investment back next year after the teaser rates ($11.99) are gone and people will want to renew their “diamonds.” Even now, if a person purchases a .co for multiple years, only the first year will be $11.99.

The Super Bowl ad . . . the now gaping price differential between the 1st and 2nd year reg fees . . . the fervent dreams of those hoping against hope for their own bite at the domain golden apple which was devoured by others a decade ago . . . the unmitigated hype by those players and stakeholders driven by the desire for the quickest, biggest payoff possible . . . all factors doing nothing more than laying the groundwork for the swiftest and largest non-renewal, non-drop pickup, non-re-register domain exodus our industry has or will ever see.

Why are you telling MHB that?

MHB has been part of the .co “marketing machine” from the very beginning according to their new website: rightofthedot.com/clients/

“The Dot CO (.co) Registry needed the right kind of sales and marketing strategy.”

“The founders of RIGHT OF THE DOT helped .co successfully launch their extension, position their premium names, and are actively involved in the sale and marketing of their most premium single letter domain name – i.co.”

    —————–

…welcome to the .co machine 😉

  20. MHB says

    February 5, 2011 at 3:37 pm

    Gazzip

I haven’t had time to do a post on RIGHT OF THE DOT yet but to address this comment, we are now consulting on the sale of the domain name i.Co

This is a project that Monte brought over from Oversee and Moniker/ Snapnames are still heavily involved in the project.

So Monte is going to continue to work on it.

As far as i.Co goes we advised them to call the auction off since they had a lot of interest from real companies and urged them to look at proposals of the various companies to find the buyer who would make the best use of the domain and not sell it necessarily to the highest bidder.

This domain is not going to wind up in the hands of a domainer so there is no reason to promote that domain on this blog.

  21. Joe says

    February 5, 2011 at 3:38 pm

    @Gazzip

“The founders of RIGHT OF THE DOT helped .co successfully launch their extension, position their premium names, and are actively involved in the sale and marketing of their most premium single letter domain name – i.co.”

And judging from the success of the .Co launch, it looks like they’ve been doing a great job 😉

  22. Robert Cline says

    February 5, 2011 at 3:42 pm

$11.99 is going to be the eventual long term registration fee for .CO I believe going forward.

This is the only way to get more registrations and eventually overtake .com to be the most popular domain extension.

“This is the only way to get more registrations and eventually overtake .com to be the most popular domain extension.”

The fact that there are people out there who think .CO will ever surpass .COM is unbelievable IMO.

Even as hyped up as .CO has been out of the gates, .COM has 3X as many regs per month as .CO has total.

In November 2010 for instance there were 2.3M new .COM regs, and a net gain of 621,000 .COM. That is for one month after 91M+ .COM are already regged.

    @Brad

    You make my point clearly.

10,000,000 renewals has to happen with .com just to stay even, just to stay where they’re at.

Once everyone realizes that they can get the real domain they always wanted

They will ditch their .com for the .CO just like

    O.CO has done.

Interesting MBH, well with you and Monte onboard it’ll have the best chance possible I’m sure if history is anything to go by 🙂 .

I’m not a .co “hater” but I do have concerns about it regarding how generics may be handled in UDRP/WIPO and what impact that may have on other extensions if it all goes tits up ….It seems nobody else here wants to discuss that aspect so I guess time will have to tell on that one.

“Gazzip are you saying MHB has hyped .co because they are a client of right of the dot ?”

No I’m not saying MHB has hyped .co but I was wondering why we did’nt get much feedback when talking about the potential downside of .co from a top influential & knowledgeable domainer when discussing .co so much.

That may be a bit one way but its not the same thing as hype IMHO.

Has there been loads of hype about .co the .com killer, .co the new king, .com is dead etc etc – sure, hype or over enthusiasm, either way everyone is entitled to their own opinion…including me 🙂 !

    “One more thing.

@ MHB – I know you have’nt said people should go buy .co and that’s entirely up to the individual to decide as always – I do know the difference between reporting news and hype so please don’t take my post that way….and I remember you chatting about this before.

What I will say is its understandable to me now (although it was’nt before) that you might not want to discuss any potential downsides openly if you’re working with/for .co.

So I just won’t ask ones like that any more …sorted I hope 🙂

I very much doubt that anyone (after seeing the SuperBowl ad) would think that they are registering .COM when the ad will be about .CO.

I do not get your line of thinking.
If they are driven to Godaddy because of the .CO ad, then I am sure they expect to register a .CO domain. I dont see why anyone would think it was a .COM.

But I have a different point of view. I trust that most people actually have a clue on what they are doing. I trust that most people (after seeing a commercial of .CO) would go to Godaddy with the exact intentions on registering a .CO domain name and not think it was .COM.

But that is just the way I see it.

All for just $35 bucks. What do you guys think? Any you like?

  62. Brad says

    February 6, 2011 at 10:34 am

    @ Robert

I am sorry but I don’t see much commercial value in any of those domains. Even in .COM they would not exactly be top shelf keywords.

Are there really many companies that deal in any of those terms? I seriously doubt it.

    CATCHES.CO

    CLEAVAGES.CO

You can guess what that’s going to be about. hahahaha.

    @ Tony

    I haven’t had any issues accessing Namejet.com

If you don’t know what keywords are, I would suggest you learn a little bit more before buying any more domains.

What drives the value of domains is commercial value, branding value, memorability, competition, etc.

    MATURETUBE.COM

    but I learned matureporn.com went for $130k

    so I said higher.

  70. BFitz says

    February 6, 2011 at 11:08 am

Rules for buying and selling .CO:
    1. The .com is parked
    2. GeoKeyword or pure Geo or Industry category killer which are all but gone.
    3. Can easily target buyers who understand internet marketing and heavily use PPC like realtors, insurance, law.
    4. Price to move at $1,000 or less to end users

I am happy to share because I have bought up all I will. There are many GeoInsurance.co, GeoRealEstate.co, GeoHomes.co, GeoAttorneys.co and GeoLawyers.co available still. Go get em’ !

Love it or hate it, .CO has a place in the Keyword PPC world which is growing too. It will never over-come .com but Kia is no BMW either, yet Kia still has a place in the market. Robert Cline is sharp as a bowling ball and the haters have every right to their opinions. But, some of us chug along selling .CO every week making hundreds for a few minutes of “work.”

  71. Robert Cline says

    February 6, 2011 at 11:12 am

    @Brad

I took you advice and registered

    SEXINCITY.CO

it had over 6,000,000 google searches so it has to be worth something right? What do you think Brad?

    I also just registered:

    MATURE.COM.CO
    DIPPED.CO
    COURTING.CO

What do you think? Do you like these? O my god I am setting up for a lot of web site development work.

  72. Brad says

    February 6, 2011 at 11:16 am

    @ Robert

My advice is to register commercially viable keywords.
“Sex in City” only has 2400 exact Google global searches, and I am sure most of those are to do with the TV show.

Does .CO have a grace delete?

    @ Bfitz

Good post. I agree with most of your points. If you deal in solid keywords, and ask realistic prices, money can be made in .CO like in many alternate extensions.

Buying domains with some clear use is is the key.

    Brad

  73. Robert Cline says

    February 6, 2011 at 11:19 am

    @Brad

I think you are wrong about that.

SexinCity all together only has 2400 exact google searches.

However, Sex in City has over 6,000,000

and most are going to type Sex in City not sexincity

  74. Brad says

    February 6, 2011 at 11:22 am

    @ Robert

Where are you getting these numbers from?

In Google Keyword Tool, which shows search volume, I see 2400 monthly Global searches.

In the keyword tool you need to choose “Exact” under match types. Otherwise you are getting irrelevant results.

    Brad

  75. Robert Cline says

    February 6, 2011 at 11:25 am

    @Brad

I don’t think so. Someone typing in “sex in city” on google search will bring up

    SEXINCITY.CO

when properly developed. This is what is most important.

  76. Brad says

    February 6, 2011 at 11:26 am

“I have done this before and the biggest danger to .Co and most troubling is losing the domain:

I have also pointed out that I don’t like that registrars are selling .Co without disclosing its a country code:”

    ————————–

@ MHB True, You have, although I think there is far more for us to lose than just the .co domain which is what I “was” hoping/trying to discuss further.

Last attempt below then I’ll STHU if noone is interested 🙂

Rick can say in a minute what I can say in days and in far less words….and I hate typing 😉

So I’ll point to his last post made today which is in the same vein:

    ricksblog.com/my_weblog/

    —————————————————–

There are of course other knock on effects that have’nt been mentioned much about .co so far but I think they are worthy of discussion.

Off the top of my head….

    1) Generic.co’s fall foul to UDRP/WIPO from .com, .co.uk, .co.kr owners etc = alot of money pissed down the drain and a bloody nose for the domain industry/market (which we’ve kinda taked about about before)

    2) New company A) starts a business with a spanky new $20 .co, files/receives a TM & builds a site.

6 months, 1 year later down the road the same domain in .com goes to the drops (as they do), DOMAINER pays $40,000 for it in auction, then Business A) files for “confusingly similar” – eeek

    3) Domainer that buys 1,000 .co’s loses 25 in WIPO/UDRP for being “confusing similar” = Labeled cybersquatter which may go against them if they end up in UDRP for one of their VALUABLE .coms that they paid $100,000 for – good chance they could lose it – eeek

    4) And then of course the very important one, “if” .co turns out to be the most squatted extension (due to the similarity of .com issue) then the suits may rush FAR REACHING LAWS into place to protect business & TM holders and they sure as hell won’t be in favour of us – eeek

There is a HUGE amount riding on the outcome of this .co extension and the general public will just be hearing about it right now – overtaking the .com or missing the boat is’nt even on my mind at this point TBH.

Personally speaking I don’t think it should have been released/marketed in the way it has been but its much too late for that……the genie is out of the bottle and it will either be magic or mayhem. 😉

    @ Landon

I totally agree with what you said in your reply about MHB and other top bloggers being open to comments/other opinions – no question there 🙂

“Now excuse me i have to get back into character and wipe the brown of my nose”

    Worst commercial I’ve ever seen.

Seriously, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. (sorry, it was THAT bad)

Total lack of excitement. Even the play on the lack of excitement equalled…well, just that. It was awkward, and creepy. I would have much preferred if they’d gone the traditional route and had Jenny McCarthy or some other hottie up there that would have at least pumped up the crowd a little bit.

A digitally-rendered, genetically-engineered version of Joan Rivers? You have got to be kidding me.

Love you Bob Parsons, and I have 155+ .COs, but that was an **Epic Fail.**

Anything Joan Rivers, you want to know more so this had that affect.

No, I think it was all Joan Rivers.

    Great commercial!

  104. Nadia says

    February 6, 2011 at 9:49 pm

    @ Robert

You’re entitled to your opinion, just as I am to mine. So your statement that “it was great” is nothing more than that, a very biased opinion, seen through the lens of unbridled enthusiasm and distorted reality.

I really think you’re more into the arguments themselves, rather than what you’re actually arguing about. Any one of us could say something, and you’d argue the other viewpoint, just to throw your two cents in there.

It’s okay that we don’t see eye to eye. I don’t instantly say that everything in life is “great,” just because. I’m thrilled that you’re living in some sort of happy bubble, but out here in the real world, there’s a collective “WTF” echoing through the halls about that commercial.

  105. Robert Cline says

    February 7, 2011 at 12:07 am

That’s exactly the effect they were going for: for you to stay WTF!

and get you chopping like you are right now.

Let’s say if it was Gwenthyn Paltrow.

Everyone would just look at her and say “Oh that’s nice” and forget all about it.

Pretty is a dime a dozen. People forget those.

    But on the other hand.
