@DomainersGate Directory – I have no idea what problem you are facing as the domain names above are viewable on Firefox (and other current browsers). Please feel free to use the IDN Event contact page to reach us and we will help you view the names that are up for auction.

@theduck – Surprising isn’t it? Top domainers like Patrick Carleton actually have large premium IDN portfolios and know what they are talking about when it comes to IDNs.

While herds of domainers have been chasing after myverylongworthlessdomain.com, a lot of smart money has been going into foreign domain markets buying top premiums for cheap — this event should be a bit of a coming out party. Many will be surprised at the names and faces that show up in NYC that night 🙂

    @Aaron,

I have some of the best IDN in the world such as Video.com in Chinese, Wireless.com, Chinese., Electronics.com, Free.com in Korean, Training.com in Japanese and others. I had them for 10 years the day they came out. Is it too late for submission to auction? I will also e-mail me. Let me know.

    Thanks, Jim

Can someone please clarify what the current situation is around IDN.coms being automatically (and solely) eligible to apply for the IDN.IDN(com) equivalent?

I imagine the final decision around this will have a significant impact on the future value of any investment made within this space.

  9. Moris says

    October 14, 2010 at 4:08 am

@Charles – You asked a very good question, but the answer is not simple.

There is a chance that in certain markets it will happen. Many of us want this to happen but there is an equal chance that it wont happen, for many many reasons.
From some you will hear that its a definite but when the time comes (and if it doesn’t happen) , where will there credibility be?? We want IDN’s to succeed but one has to be careful between wishful thinking and reality.

There are also those that oppose that and for good reasons including many ascii domainers, for obvious reasons.. Realize that those who are promoting at this stage sales of these hybrid domains have their own agenda as we all do. That is legitimate but don’t take what you see or hear for face value. Enough said.

    @ Moris

Thanks for your response. Can you be a little more specific?

Who will make the final decision on this, and at what stage of the process do we currently stand?

Why will the dual/hybrid model apply to some TLD’s (gTLD and/or ccTLD’s), and not others?

I am aware China for example has its own .zhongguo (in characters) since earlier this year, but that general user awareness and adoption rates are still very low.

This raises another question: are adoption rates of IDNs on the rise at all? Even in markets where English is not the language of choice, internet users have been socialised to put the .com, .cn in roman characters for the last two decades. I imagine any shift to IDNs will be a gradual one over time, and that investments should similarly be considered for the long term (5-10 years?) rather than a quick flip.

  11. Aaron Krawitz says

    October 14, 2010 at 8:09 am

@Charles – ICANN has not yet officially approved aliasing/grandfathering IDN.com to IDN.IDN-in-com, but recent statements from Verisign (see here: http://idnblog.com/2009/12/03/exclusive-qa-chuck-gomes-verisign/) and Tina Dam of ICANN indicate we should expect IDN.com aliasing (http://idnblog.com/2010/05/06/global-domain-names-plain-english/). It is up to each individual to make his own determination re: the odds of this happening based on the information above, but personally, I think it is extremely likely (well over 90%) that this happens for the major languages — Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, Arabic, Korean and Thai based on the statements we’ve seen.

Some ccTLD registries have already applied for the same aliasing, and this is up to each registry (see here: http://idnblog.com/2010/07/07/idnblog-exclusive-interview-hiro/)

  12. Aaron Krawitz says

    October 14, 2010 at 8:13 am

Also, to correct a misconception, the future of IDNs doesn’t solely hinge on IDN.com being aliased to IDN.IDN, though this would help tremendously. Contrary to what some think, in many countries such as in Japan it is very common to switch back and forth between Japanese characters and English characters ex: DVDプレーヤー (“DVD Player” in Japanese). So it is not a barrier to have to type a domain in Japanese and then the extension in English.

@Charles – You ask very good questions. Some are multi million dollars questions. Maybe unfair to expect more than 10 years of knowledge, knowhow and experience to be shared in a 2 liner?

I would be happy to answer your questions but this is information I give to high end clients who come to me for consultation. If I had to attempt to be funny I would say:” No disrespect intended but don’t bother if you are not rich. I don’t mean to sound arrogant like the Chinese http://www.thedomains.com/2010/10/10/now-the-chinese-have-even-learned-how-to-sell-a-domain-from-rick-schwartz/ or like Rick Schwartz whom I do respect as each has their own style.
