Sedo .TV Auction Ends With $800K In Sales: Our Winners & Losers

April 8, 2010 by Michael Berkens

The Sedo .TV auction just ended after about 2 1/2 hours of extended bidding when loans.TV  sold for around $14K.

Business.TV lead the pack and broke the six figure mark selling for just over $100K.

Learn.TV sold for $40K+

Job.tv and jobs.tv sold for $20k+ each.

The big losers were the Geo’s, with Japan.TV and Germany.TV selling for just around 10k each.

Another surprise for me was that the single digit domains; 2.tv, 3.tv, 4.tv, 5.tv sold for just in the mid-four figures.

The single character that sold for the most, 4.TV sold for $5,555, which is less than any single number .biz sold for on their single character Sedo Auction (2.biz sold for $5,801)

The biggest reach IMHO was Christmas.TV which sold for what I think is a staggering price of $32K.

Home.TV sold for $31K.

For the record, I predicted last night that this auction would do $750K.

You can place your vote for your 2 best buys on the poll on the right.

Business.TV – Hope to see that evolve into something great one day. A great investment grade name as well.

    Max

    Agreed

    Thanks for the list Mike,

We picked up a name at around the 2.5 K mark. Ironically just a few weeks ago we nearly signed up to the same name at yearly premium renewals for $1500 a year. Really happy with our deal and happy with the auction outcomes.

All in all it was a bright day for .TV

Some good buys, but for some, I just don’t see the TV application.

Some names fit a TV application more than others.

We picked up one, just to test the water 🙂

    Aron

I think its smart to do like you said test the water.

I wouldn’t go all in or make it a substantial part of your overall domain investments but I think its smart to have an interest in the space.

I picked up a few today and have around 20 .TV domains

It was a great auction indeed. Thanks for the updates.

I have around 20 .tv domains too by now, no plans on getting more until some of them are fully developed.

I was fighting hard to get one domain today but it looked like the max offer was over $10k so I called it quits 🙁 Kinda regret it now when I think about it..

“For the record, I predicted last night that this auction would do $750K.”

Good prediction, Pretty Damn Close 🙂

$800K is a great result, I’m surprised Japan & Germany did’nt go for alot more though.

  8. James Barclay says

    April 8, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Agree with above comment – $750k excellent guess.

What is so important is that for the first time in a very long time, there is an open and varifiable xxx,xxx sale on Sedo.

I know of a few xxx,xxx sales but are all subject to NDAs.

Since lack of transparency is one of the key issues that hold this extension back, today was a good day. The market has spoken.

    1. Premium renewals will become history or be dropped
    2. Every single name should come under a single system of pricing

If these things happen, then I believe that .TV will finally have its day.

And yes, I would advise everyone to get invested in the extension for the potential upside. Right now, there is very little downside. (except for legacy premiums which should not be touched with a bargepole and I say that owning premiums)

20 names or less seems a good watermark. I personally hold about 30.

  9. Jim Holleran says

    April 8, 2010 at 4:20 pm

    @MHB,

What names did you get today?

  10. MHB says

    April 8, 2010 at 4:25 pm

    Jim

I’m going to hold off for a little while before I disclose that, for one I don’t want to influence the poll.

  11. steven says

    April 8, 2010 at 5:38 pm

97% of the domains bought today will not be developed or bought for end user use in the next 15 years. There will not be an ROI on these names except to the companies selling them.

Wow…I feel someone got violated…either the seller of shows.com (from 6 months ago) or the buyer of shows.tv

  12. Leonard Britt says

    April 8, 2010 at 5:50 pm

I believe as today’s sales get reported in the coming weeks at DNJournal, we will see an increase in interest in the extension. That could be bad for those who already follow the extension as the competition for drops will increase. And domainers normally aren’t your ideal buyer. But developers can make good potential clients.

Glad to see you get a few Mike, and it will be interesting to see what you got. There were 43 names that were not Verisign .tv that closed too. Coffee.tv for $2550 might have been the best buy of those. Suck.tv sold for $800 too.

Aron nice to see involved. Best of luck with the name.

  14. Samit says

Thanks for the quick auction update. Your guess was great! I pegged it lower.

On the whole it was a mixed bag, the generics went higher than expected, the geos a LOT lower.

I’m sure whoever got the geos will be laughing all the way to the bank though.

  15. Louise says

    April 8, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Thanx for the poll – it’s fun! I voted Japan.tv the best buy, because it sold lower than expected, and am surprised to see it is #2, so far. Cable.tv, of course, is amazing! My excavation.tv is going to be fun to develop for the heavy construction industry!

  16. Gazzip says

    April 8, 2010 at 8:55 pm

“For the record, I predicted last night that this auction would do $750K.”

I just reread your previous post and noticed you actually said/predicted $800k not $750k

wow…you were even closer 🙂 (for the record)

    ….do I get the booby prize ? 🙂

    Can use right away.

Thank You for your complete list.
I can’t believe how quickly you published it!
    Almost immediately after the auction.

It sure was a lot of fun while it lasted.

We set up an alternate Sedo/.Tv NP Auction to coincide with the start and end time of the big Sedo auction and really wanted to see if we could break the record of concurrently running .TV’s on auction.

The most .TV’s I ever remember all running at the same time were maybe 7 or 8 at most.

Well, at one point this week we had 47 .TV’s on auction!
At the same time, Sedo/Enoms big auction was going with 115 .TV’s on auction so,
If you add them all together there were actually 162 .TV’s all on auction at the same time mid week this week! I believe we broke the record this week. 🙂

It was a fun bit of .Tv News, so I just figured I would share it here. 🙂

Well, I owned Black.tv and Wow.tv for a little while today,
then the deeper pockets came in and kicked me to the curb, LOL

I REALLY wish I would have grabbed Cable.tv though!
The absolute best sale by far today. IMO
That will end up being a 6 figure sale one day… I just know it!

    Oh well, Back to reality.

I like music a lot and have a quite a few music related domains,
so I ended up grabbing almost the bottom of the barrel today…Tunes – tv.

Much better than i-Tunes, so I’m figuring on about a 7 figure deal for it one day soon…LOL

    Take Care,
    Vito.

I picked up lawyers.tv and several others. Most of these sold for less than I thought they would. I’m sure we’ll start seeing these pop up again next year in the live auctions. Question is: will they be valued higher? I think so.

  20. Richard Kligman says

    April 9, 2010 at 6:35 am

Braden, so your the one who out bid me on lawyers.tv! Nice grab for a great price. Thanks for freeing up my cash so I could get coffee.tv later that night 🙂

  21. Mikey says

    April 9, 2010 at 8:48 am

Wow – Big believer in the .tv domain thing as it has huge marketing potential – Big biznesses will leverage the clickability through tv and then WHEN TV and the web are integrated, some of these will fetch millions.

    congrats to all.
    Mikey

  24. Lakshan says

I think cable.tv @ $4,000 is the bigest bargain here. Keyword exactly matches with the TLD.
