Even The Pope Doesn’t Like The New gTLD’s: Tells ICANN To Say NO To Religious Extensions

March 5, 2009 by Michael Berkens

The new domain extensions problem have reached a new “high” as The Pope has called on ICANN to keep religion out of the domain name system.

The Vatican warned ICANN of the “perils” of allowing new internet domains such as “.catholic, .anglican, .orthodox, .hindu, .islam, .muslim, and .buddhist”.

ICANN, could find itself having to decide who gets to represent an entire religion on the internet, His Holiness pointed out, in a letter from Monsignor Carlo Maria Polvani.

Religion-themed domains could provoke “bitter disputes” that would force ICANN into “recognizing to a particular group or to a specific organization the legitimacy to represent a given religious tradition,” Polvani told outgoing ICANN chief Paul Twomey.

I know what ICANN’s answer to The Pope will be already.

If you want to object to any extension we have laid out a proccedure for doing so in our guidebook.

You have the right to contest any of these extension by spending the  $50,000+, it will take to object to each and every religious domain extension that might be applied for.

Just  ask the churchgoers to dig a little deep in their pocket to put more money in the collection plate, so they can fight each new extension religious extension.

Seriously the many nightmarish problems and issues are just starting concerning these new extensions.

What if multiple groups apply for a  .god extension, who gets to play god?

Well I guess the highest bidder, according to the ICANN’s Guidebook.

Huh. Can’t the Pope just call on God to intervene? Seems simple to me.

Finding the panelists to decide whether the Sunni or Shi’a faction gets dotIslam should be a hoot.

    Andrew,

God told ICANN not to do it.

But ICANN listens only to the other guy.

You know, the one down below. 🙂

I CAN’t WAIT for the new GTLDs to come live!
I really can’t wait.. I’m so ready to see them come out like little mushrooms after heavy rain! I can’t wait to see people who believe in them start shouting out loud “come visit my beautiful .whatever”

    why I can’t wait??…

Well,.. It will simply create such a terrible MESS , (maybe Chaos! 😉 ),that users will simply get lost, confused..

and when one is not sure which option to chose from, one normally goes for the surest one.. and the surest one will be ??

    the .com of course 😉

This and most all other extension schemes make the .com extension shine with relevance. If its not .com its .bomb.

Perfect post. The comment about contesting the extension for $50,000 … makes me laugh and shake my head in disgust. Only because I know how true that comment is. They call that “shameless” where I come from.

This shows just how difficult the new TLD process will be…..now on a more emotional and heated topic of religion.

However, it is becoming clear that just like the real world, this process is ruled by the haves and certainly not the have nots. To comment you must pay $50,000…..wow, that is unbelievable!

Isn’t that how the catholic system works?

    🙂

    Andrew

Just to be clear, you can comment for free on ICANN site

I will be posting the info when the deadline gets closer.

To formally challenge an extension, that’s what costs
